Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Is Live Now with New Modes and Portal Action

Splitgate 2 Alpha Now Live with New 8v8v8 Modes
Splitgate 2 Open Alpha Launches with Fresh Modes and Faster Action
Splitgate 2, the fast-paced portal shooter from 1047 Games, is back with a major open alpha—live now across PC, PS5, and Xbox. From February 27 to March 2, players can jump into a revamped experience that includes new game modes, bigger maps, and crucial tweaks based on community feedback.
This weekend's alpha brings back everything fans loved about the original Splitgate—slick movement, creative portal combat, and frantic arena gunfights—while dialing up the chaos with larger battles and smarter respawn mechanics. And yes, crossplay is fully supported, so bring your squad, regardless of platform.
New Game Modes in the Splitgate 2 Alpha
While the full lineup of game modes is extensive, two stood out during our hands-on preview: Hotzone and Splitball.
Hotzone: A Strategic Twist on King of the Hill
In Hotzone, the first team to capture two hill points wins the round. What makes this mode unique is its dynamic respawn mechanic—as the round progresses, respawn timers get longer. But if your teammates land kills, they can shave down that timer for the entire squad. Think of it as a built-in comeback mechanic that rewards clutch plays.
Splitball: A Throwback with a Portal Twist
Splitball is reminiscent of Halo’s Griffball, where teams fight over a ball to score goals. The twist? After a score, your opponents can infiltrate your base and steal the goal back—turning every victory into a moment of vulnerability.
8v8v8 Multi-Team Matches Incoming
One of the most anticipated features is multi-team 8v8v8 matches. While not yet live in the alpha, 1047 Games promises this mode will offer a massive scale upgrade over the classic 4v4 arena fights.
These large-scale battles will take place on Glacier, a map that is “20 times bigger than any of our arena maps,” according to the developers. With more players, more space, and more portals, Glacier could redefine the Splitgate experience once it's added to the alpha.
Faster Respawns, More Portal Options
1047 Games has been listening to its community. Based on feedback from last year’s playtest, this alpha includes several critical updates:
-
Faster Respawn Times: Keeping the pace high and matches intense
-
Longer Rounds: Letting players make bigger plays and comebacks
-
More Portal Surfaces: Expanding creative movement options
-
New Launch Portals: A hybrid of launch pads and portals that launch you into dynamic positions
These tweaks make Splitgate 2 feel more like itself again. Fans who thought previous tests leaned too far into "Call of Duty with portals" should find this build more satisfying—and more distinct.
How to Join the Open Alpha
The Splitgate 2 open alpha is free to play and runs from February 27 through March 2 on:
-
Steam (PC)
-
PlayStation 5
-
Xbox Series X|S
Crossplay is available across all platforms, so rally your friends and dive into one of the most inventive shooters of the year—no matter what system they’re on.
Final Thoughts
With new multi-team modes, smarter respawns, and expanded portal mechanics, Splitgate 2 is shaping up to be more than just a sequel—it’s a bold evolution of what made the original game so much fun. Don’t miss the chance to try it during the open alpha, and stay tuned to Playze for future updates, guides, and the best deals on Splitgate and other top FPS titles.
