About Holodance

Holodance was the first VR rhythm game shown to the public, mid 2015, and released into Early Access as one of the first two VR rhythm games April 5, 2016. Since then, it has evolved from "Dancing with Dragons" with only a few songs specifically produced for the game in its environmentalism themed Story Mode (WIP, see Early Access), to also letting you play your local music library as well as any of the 60,000 ranked maps for osu! for more than 12,000 songs in Holodance Free Mode:

Play in 20 diverse environments, ranging from a tropical beach or underwater environment with dolphins and whales, to trippy abstract tunnels or asteroid fields:

Whether you follow our friendly dragons down the rabbit hole of a potential dystopic future, and get to fistbump Pritvitej along the way (WIP, preview), or prefer challenging yourself with high-intensity beatmaps in a Zero Distraction environment and get a nice workout while you're at it - Holodance has you covered. The game even lets you catch those orbs with your head - and if you already have Vive trackers, you can catch them with your feet, too, Kung Fu style:

What is Holodance? Holo obviously was inspired by Holodeck, so imagine "dancing in the Holodeck". Of course, "dancing" just means tuning into the rhythm and freely moving with the music. There are orbs arriving perfectly in sync with the music that you need to catch, and curves you need to follow. But no, we're not gonna tell you how to move because we consider dancing really a free expressive movement of rhythm and joy.

Credits

While there are currently only four people working on the game full-time, it is actually an international collaboration with talents from across the globe. For the full credits, check out our Press Kit.

Mixed Reality, Vive Trackers, Streamer Mode

Holodance has full support for Mixed Reality, using the regular SteamVR quadrant view, MixCast (which requires a subscription but has the nice benefit of doing compositing in-game), and also native LIV integration.

Vive Trackers are not required to play Holodance but if you have two and attach them to your feet, you can catch orbs with your feet. Up to 7 Vive Trackers (3 recommended) are support by the Holodance Avatar system which lets you breathe life into various forms, from Animé characters to sci-fi soldiers. The Avatar system ties into Streamer Mode, which is designed to let spectators watch players from various 3rd person perspectives that can even be switched automatically by the game, perfectly on the beat.

For Arcades and Parties / Demos

We have built-in several features into Holodance to make it work well in demo / party / arcade scenarios. If you enjoy doing demos, or run an arcade, make sure to talk to us.

I can appreciate it for being one of the original VR dance/rhythm games, but it does not hold up to today when you have much better options. You have two options in the game, the original story mode, which is basically where dragons throw colored balls at you. The dragons are really pretty, but it all seems a bit random and out of place and I never really felt like I was "dancing". The second option is a free mode, in which they don't seem to have any songs of their own (the UI is also a confusing mess to navigate). It's more all player made maps, which means you might find something you like if you dig far enough but there seems to be no ranking, so you will have no idea if the map you pick is actually *good* or not. Even with some of the expert and expert + maps I played, I didn't really get that dance feeling like you do in something like Audio Trip, Beat Saber, or Synth Riders, unfortunately. I appreciate the fact that apparently it supports LIV mixed reality and foot trackers, but unfortunately I could get neither working with this particular game. The avatar in LIV would work, but then after a few seconds of being in the game it would be obscured by black screen. Holod…

Exactly what I was looking for! I have been scouring all the VR dancing and rythm games looking for something similar to IIDX or Stepmania. This game lets you download ranked osu! files in game and play them immediately. You can download osu! and get unranked files for that, and the next time you start Holodance those songs will be added. If the backgrounds could play videos and custom images it would be perfect.

I am a 45 yo father, probably one of the oldest people playing this game. I am a single father to my Son, who is 14 now. My son got this game from his uncle, so we installed it on his computer and he started playing. By the end of the week he had 24 hours on this game. This was horrible for me, as it was already hard for me to find ways to spend time with my son, as he is always out with his friends or just watching YouTube. So I decided to make a Steam account and get this game to see if I could maybe play alongside him. I loaded into the game, picked my character and world and started playing but I was stuck on what you where supposed to do. I asked my Son for help and he hosted a game for me to join. I loved it as it was the best time I had spent with my Son since my wife had died. This game has ever since brought me and my son closer again and now we actually spend time together outside the house together as well. This game reminded me that there's fun to be had in everything, and it has brought both me and my Son many happy memories.

The user interface needs work. I do not like having to click on an option 5 times in rapid succession for it to register that I clicked it. Also the main menu is a little overwhelming with all the lights, sounds, and options. As a beginning player, keep the more advanced options hidden away until I have accrued enough points to unlock it. And maybe add a tutorial? like how to navigate the menu, and how to play a song. I went into the first song with no idea what I was supposed to do with certain things, like the spiral. I was honestly too confused to have fun, which sucks because this game does look fun.

Coming from Audioshield which I still really like this game is amazing. I can still use my own music and the maps are PHENOMENAL! I've only been playing free mode and less than 10 songs but I know it'll be taking the top spot over Audioshield, which I'll still play for a less active session. GREAT game and can't recommend it enough.

Very enjoyable, nice bright colours, happy music which reminds me of Amiga-days, good work out and hand-eye coordination which also requires you to move your feet, arch your legs and change the stance quite a lot. I enjoy it more than Beat Saber both in graphics and movements. Excellent for taking a break from the seated mouse and keyboard position and getting some much needed alternative muscle movements. Heartbeat around 100 which is not too much and also not too much perspiration. Price is well worth it, I absolutely recommend.
