About Walkerman

Setting:

Walkerman is a Visual Novel about a boy who embarks upon a career in monster hunting. As a walkerman, he will hunt a breed of supernatural creatures with only one weakness: their rules. Each creature obeys its own unique set of rules, such as being unable to cross over salt or pass before mirrors. And it's only by entrapping these creatures within their rules that walkermen can hope to defeat them.

Each act of Walkerman centers around one such creature, and the process of investigating it. Players must study their quarry, gather any necessary items, and then confront it in battle. Attention to detail and clever usage of items will determine whether the player completes the contract, or is taken by the night.

Gameplay:

Most of the game takes place in a Visual Novel format. The player assumes the role of Jorgen, a young walkerman who's recently arrived in the city of Midgard. Throughout the Visual Novel sections of Walkerman, players will guide Jorgen through his investigations--as well as his personal troubles. Decisions the players make can have drastic outcomes on Jorgen's life, both in and out of combat.

Combat gameplay takes place on an isometric, pseudo-board game. The player selects actions from a list of options, including movement, item usage, or split-second decisions. Each combat sequence has multiple solutions, dependent on the player's item collection and knowledge of their quarry.

Acts:

Prologue: The Thing in the Weald
Jorgen, a nineteen year-old serf, has just embarked upon a peculiar career: monster hunting. As a walkerman, he will tour the streets and alleyways at night, battling supernatural creatures that emerge when the sun goes down. But before he can reach the city-state of Midgard, a chance encounter will send him spiraling headlong into a world beyond light and reason...
Out Now

Act 1: Welcome to Midgard
Jorgen's arrival in Midgard is marked by suspicious characters, perilous nights, and the all-pervading smell of a civilization in decay. Both ostracized and incensed by his countrymen, he raises his standard in the world's loneliest revolution...
Out Now

Act 2: Herdchaser-girl
Jorgen has survived his first contract, but now finds himself trapped between the circumstances of his family, religion, and trade. Hounded by their demands—and another more sinister offer—the young walkerman soon finds assistance in the most unlikely of allies...
Out Now

Act 3: Theories
Surfeited by his surroundings and disillusioned with his trade, Jorgen seeks a new path forward for himself and Midgard. The city-state hosts a few theory-peddlers ready to provide just that, but their medicine might prove worse than the sickness...

First impressions: Scandinavian folklore premise. Interesting.

The battles against the monster and researching the is monster fun. Sadly, only about a half hour of the game consists of this. The other 3.5 hours is devoted to listening characters being racist, sexist, and spouting religious propaganda, while not making any decisions. I can certainly appreciate some world building. However, in this fantasy world with fantasy creatures that you are devoted to learning about and combating, almost zero time is spent on these fantastical monsters. The world isn't even that fantastical, as fantasy Poland just seems to be real life Poland from the descriptions. If you believe you will miss out of any of the main character's day you are mistaken. You play through them waking up, getting breakfast, getting lunch, drinking at the tavern, going on a date, having a spat with their cousin, going out to buy soap and so forth. You would hope that maybe some of the things you learned would be useful, but that is not the case. There is one character who basically has all the useful information on the creature. And when I say the creature, I mean the only one. There is two if you count the one the story doesn't let you make any decisions on, but this is no d…

Way better than I was expecting. So far, a great story that deserves more attention. Solid writing, intriguing characters, its fresh take on monster hunting and a well-drawn setting set this VN up to be something special. While it's easy to draw comparison to the Witcher, I'd say it sets itself apart as its own thing. I enjoyed taking note that the writer seems to have done more research than average on how the medieval setting would work creating a wonderful grounding for the more supernatural elements. This world feels cohesive and not just a mishmash of tropes from other sources. Well done. The main character is more than just a self-insert as he has his own issues and worldviews to grapple with, often contrasting to the world and events around him making for interesting situations and juxtapositions. His view may come off as abrasive to some, but I can't say that they don't make sense considering the hints we get about his past and the world around him. I'd say it was a good choice for the character and it makes for a better story overall. I really hope this doesn't get cancelled, seems like it's been quite a while since the last act came out. Way shoddier works have lived t…

If Walkerman could ever get to 30-35 hours of storytelling while maintaining and maybe improving upon the first two Acts, it would be an amazing series. For the moment, it is a good VN with a fascinating story and unique gameplay mechanics. Walkerman takes a very unorthodox approach to lore building, character development and gameplay. The concept of a Walkerman itself seem to have some inspiration drawn from the Witcher. However, the divergence from the later is refreshing and creates an interesting logic-driven way of fighting the chief antagonists of the game - the creatures from the weird. The fights never feel boring or unnecessarily grindy and one is always on the lookout for some item throughout the VN parts, which will give one an advantage throughout the fights. The lore building itself is unique as the story challenges the players to piece together the world state by drawing inferences from the conversations and not by frequent info dumps. The main character is unnatural in that he is not really a knight in shinning armor nor a defined badass anti-hero. The writers are brave - brave in that without the leaps of character progression towards the end of Act 2, I would hav…
