Elden Ring: Nightreign – A Fresh Take on Soulsborne Multiplayer

Elden Ring: Nightreign – A New Challenge Awaits
Elden Ring: Nightreign – A New Challenge Awaits
FromSoftware is back with Elden Ring: Nightreign, an expansion that reimagines the Lands Between with a fresh, high-stakes experience. Departing from the vast, open-ended exploration of the base game, Nightreign introduces a structured, roguelike-inspired gameplay loop that challenges even the most seasoned Tarnished.
A Parallel World of Darkness
Nightreign isn’t just an expansion—it’s a complete reimagining of Elden Ring’s mechanics. Set in an alternate version of Limgrave, the game’s world is procedurally generated with shifting layouts, randomized enemies, and unexpected environmental hazards. Every run feels unique, keeping players on their toes with an ever-changing landscape of danger and discovery.
The Shift to Roguelike Gameplay
Unlike the base game, where players shape their own progression, Nightreign starts each run with players at level 1. Instead of carrying over builds from previous adventures, players must earn runes to strengthen their characters within each session. Each run lasts between 30 to 45 minutes, with the structure divided into five phases—day one, night one, day two, night two, and the final boss battle. The map is fully open from the start, allowing teams to plan their exploration and level up as quickly as possible. Persistent buffs, called relics, are awarded after every round, giving players an incentive to perform well.
A Cast of Unique Heroes
Instead of creating custom characters, players choose from a roster of eight predefined heroes, each with distinct weapons, abilities, and playstyles. The current test build features four classes: Wylder, a balanced all-arounder; Duchess, a speedy glass cannon; Guardian, a tanky powerhouse; and Recluse, a formidable spellcaster with significant FP limitations. Each class has its own strategic depth, with some requiring more finesse than others to master effectively.
Faster, Deadlier Combat
Combat in Nightreign is fine-tuned for quicker engagements. Sites of Grace activate instantly, eliminating downtime, while fall damage has been removed entirely, allowing for seamless movement across treacherous terrain. These tweaks make for an experience that emphasizes fast decision-making and relentless action.
A Unique Multiplayer Experience – Not a Battle Royale
One of the most important things to clarify about Nightreign is that it is not a battle royale. While the game does feature squads dropping into a map and scavenging for resources, the comparisons end there. Nightreign is a cooperative roguelike, built around PVE encounters and structured challenges. There is no player-versus-player combat, and the goal is not to be the last team standing. Instead, teams must work together to grow stronger, overcome escalating dangers, and ultimately defeat the final boss.
Despite this, the game does capture the high-stakes tension that battle royale fans will recognize. The rush of making critical loot decisions under pressure, the frantic dash to reach a Site of Grace before being overwhelmed, and the crushing defeat of a run gone wrong all add to the thrill. However, Nightreign is purely about cooperative survival, with a structured progression that distinguishes it from any competitive shooter experience.
Limited Network Test & Release Window
A network test is scheduled for February 2025, giving select players an early look at Nightreign’s mechanics and co-op functionality. While the full release date remains unconfirmed, Elden Ring: Nightreign is expected to launch later in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
Final Thoughts
Elden Ring: Nightreign reinvents the Soulsborne formula with a fresh, unpredictable structure while retaining the brutal combat and intricate world-building that define FromSoftware’s masterpieces. With its roguelike approach, predefined hero classes, and multiplayer-driven design, Nightreign promises to be a thrilling addition to the Elden Ring universe. Players should prepare for an entirely new kind of challenge—one where survival is never guaranteed, and every night is a battle against fate itself.
