Spidersaurs

Simple and good fun. Movin and shootin all the bugsaurs. I don't have many other thoughts outside of that since I can feel the inspirations right out the gate. I would recommend to anyone.

[h2]Pretty neat run 'n gun! Really short though.[/h2] Okay so, I'm about as big of a WayForward fan as one could be. I love most of their repertoire, I think they make super neat games. Especially love the Shantae series, that's one of my favorite indie franchises ever, in general. [b]Spidersaurs[/b] is weird 'cause it just kind of... Came and went with little fanfare? I didn't even know it existed until a good bit after its release, and apparently even PEOPLE WHO WERE FOLLOWING IT were barely aware it came out at all. That doesn't mean it's bad, mind you, I DO think it's neat! Just... very short. And a little bit unremarkable gameplay-wise. And kind of expensive for something you can beat in an hour-and-something on your first time relatively easily. And it just sort of came out and was forgotten about immediately. Right, so, the game itself! It's a [i]Contra-like[/i]. It's a run 'n gun platformer, and it basically plays LIKE a Contra game. It shares a lot of mechanics with that, but adding a couple things of its own (since you unlock new moves with every stage you beat). To summarize, you can run, jump and shoot to start with. This is what happens when you get a title with cute visuals, but is hard as nails - some people are gonna be unhappy. Four years on, you should be looking at this on discount, which it's easy to recommend it at. Would I have rushed to spend the full asking price... well no, I didn't. But it's made in a great Saturday morning cartoon style, complete with intro and song. The dialogue is ironic and funny and the gameplay challenging enough on Normal - I say that as one who usually opts for Hard and goes down if need be... I needed. A lot of gamers use these as things they have a run at between other games. And there's no limit on retries and you can start again mid level once you've got there. Which is pretty friendly. Many of these that would be it, back to the beginning with you. I'll keep happily chipping away at it, though it's obvious right away that eating the enemies and gaining abilities is not gonna turn out well x)

I discovered this game AFTER playing Wayforward's other recent Run & Gun game: Contra Operation Galuga. I liked both of these games, but you can tell Wayforward made this game BEFORE they made Contra Operation Galuga. Very similar mechanics and gameplay. Spidersaurs has more annoying enemy placement and poor bullet drops locations, but this was fixed in Contra Operation Galuga. I think they used this game as a modern trial on how to make a modern day Run & Gun game, with still having much of what you would expect from a tradional game from the genre. FYI: early criticism of Spidersaurs was that you could not remap the button controls. They have definately fixed that as I was able to make the controls the exact same as in COntra Operation Galuga. In the end, if you are a fan of the Run & Gun genre, you cant go wrong with giving this game a try.

A fun run'n'gun! Played it entirely on Steam Deck and it ran flawlessly. (+) Great presentation. Not only the graphics but the overall presentation is really nice. (+) Standard and tight controls that work well for the game. (+) it's a run n gun and it's good. That's rare these days (+) Not very hard but also not a cake walk. I enjoyed the difficulty (+) Bosses were fun except... (-) the midboss where you have to throw it on the lava is some serious bs, not enjoyable at all (-) the weapon balance is all over the place. I only found a few of them to be actually useful. (-) movement options were not very well explored (well, dash and double jump are always useful as expected)

I hate to say this but this game should have been an animated series, the 'cutscenes' are just the sprites on idle and always on the same background, the whole action comes with the dialogue and dialogue portraits, and like 90% of the backgrounds on the game look drab wich is weird because the character and monster design is on point wich is why I actually would have prefer this to be a cartoon show, I feel these great designs weren't exploited at all. (I mean come on, not even statics CGs? I'm not asking for something like the excelent intro the game had just a bit more fun with the setting). On the gameplay side of things, it's fun if kinda short and believe me the boring backdrops for the levels didn't help much on that, but again the design on the main characters is what pulls all the weight as both characters are very distinctive and fun (though one of the guy's weapons 'the football bomb' has such a high damage output that I believe that it's a honest to goodness mistake) and the bosses are gorgeous to look at and fun... the levels not so much, and SCREW level 4, ALL OF LEVEL 4.
