About The Art Theft by Jay Doherty
The Art Theft by Jay Doherty is an interactive VR narrative that injects 3D drawings created by the user into a whimsical world and unfolding narrative. Made by Tilt Brush Artist in Residence Jay Doherty and Tilt Brush co-creator Patrick Hackett, this interactive story allows you to bring your imagination to life in a reimagined “Mad Libs” VR experience. The Art Theft by Jay Doherty is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this "art experience". Instead of being a game, The Art Theft by Jay Doherty is a software application that presents a poorly made art exhibition. This is a barely interactive art exhibition/VR experience from Google, who really should google whether a crap VR youtube video is the same thing as a game before they pollute Steam with this stuff. The idea is you wave your arms about to make a little drawing and then watch a youtube video about the drawing with some low poly furries in it. Jesus wept, they want us to think this is a game. It's true that games can be art... art is where the pinnacles of craftsmanship and quality meet vision and narrative to create an experience far greater than the sum of the parts. This isn't a game at all, and the craftsmanship and narrative are terrible. This isn't making art better, it's just making gaming worse. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random blo…1 found this helpful
The Art Theft is a game that captures the true essence of committing a sophisticated crime: **looking cool in your head** while actually bumping into everything like a Roomba with anxiety. You boot it up thinking you’ll be some elegant, high-IQ phantom thief—black gloves, silent footsteps, dramatic lighting. Then five minutes in you’re crouch-walking at 0.3 mph, staring at corners like they owe you money, and whispering “please don’t notice me” to an inanimate object that absolutely has noticed you. The vibe is peak “indie heist energy”: tense, moody, and sprinkled with that dry humor where the game feels like it’s smirking at your choices. Nothing hits like the moment you realize your master plan is falling apart because you misjudged a doorway. A DOORWAY. The oldest technology known to man. **Pros:** * Great atmosphere for a sneaky little caper * Perfect “one more try, I can do this cleaner” loop * Makes you feel like a criminal mastermind (occasionally) **Cons:** * My stealth rating is basically a confession * I have never been humbled by framed artwork like this * I spent more time panicking than thieving 9/10. I came to steal art. I left with stress, a new fear of silen…

This was pretty cool. Even though my drawings sucked, I liked how they were included in this very short story.
