What makes Pier Solar so special?

Pier Solar was originally designed and developed for the SEGA Mega Drive and SEGA Genesis. Yes, you read that right!! It was actually the only newly developed game for SEGA's 16-bit system in the new millennium. It's not a port, fan translation, or a copy of any other game. Pier Solar is a 100% brand new, entirely original,16-bit RPG.

We'll get right in to what we think makes Pier Solar so special:
  • A 100% Original RPG! Pier Solar was developed from the ground up. An original world, storyline, soundtrack, characters, enemies, and battle style. No ports, translations or copying from any other game - it's all fresh! The first original 16-bit RPG to do this in over a decade!
  • A Massive World to Explore! Pier Solar has 50+ hours of gameplay, over 300 locations, nearly 500 unique treasure chests, and over 800 NPCs!
  • Director's cut! Pier Solar expands what was the biggest 16-bit RPG Ever! We released Pier Solar on a custom 64MEG cartridge (the average SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis game size is 12MEG), making it the biggest 16-bit RPG ever! This allowed us to push the 16-bit medium to a precedent setting level, with state-of-the-art aesthetics and things like full-screen cut scenes, background scaling and 3D modes. But Pier Solar HD is more than just a port, the game is getting a Director's cut, and includes an expanded story with new locations and challenges, that couldn't fit on its original Sega Genesis/Mega Drive release.
  • Epic Battle Tactics! We developed an innovative battle system that puts you in control of up to five characters and includes in-depth strategic moves such as counter-attacks and a special strategy called Gather, which stores energy to unleash even more powerful moves and spells!
  • Translated in 6 Languages! Pier Solar is translated in 6 languages: English, Japanese, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and German.
  • An Original Soundtrack! A beautiful soundtrack written just for Pier Solar that embodies everything great about a classic retro soundtrack!
  • There Are Surprises! We also packed-in many other surprises and secrets like hidden areas and mini-games!

Pier Solar truly is a love letter to the rich, imaginative 16-bit RPGs of a bygone era. We crafted Pier Solar in the same light - with an authentic adventure, that resonates deeply about life, death, love, family, and friendship. Remember the wonder you felt when immersed into your favorite retro RPG? Pier Solar captures that same wonder.

✦ AI summary

Pier Solar has charming retro JRPG aesthetics and pixel art that evoke classic series like Lunar, which appeals to nostalgia-driven players. However, players consistently report frustrating issues including clunky controls, poor menu design, opaque gameplay mechanics, and combat that artificially drags encounters through arbitrary enemy type restrictions, making the experience feel tedious rather than engaging despite its solid foundation.

Only an hour in, but so far its solid enough. Nothing to write home about, but combat is simple enough, controls are decent and the pixel art is nice to look at. All in all its a solid old school JRPG with the good and ugly aspects that come with it.

I tried to like this game, but the controls are pretty terrible even after you remap them and when I tried to exit out of a menu that didn't elaborate what it was for, it exited the game and I lost pretty much the whole first 45 minutes of gameplay. I think they game could be fun, but there are A LOT of menu and control issues that just made me rage quit, to be perfectly frank. Battles are a bit wonky but nothing too far off from old school turn based combat, but it looks like they are choosing to arbitrarily make battles longer/more difficult by having only one or potentially two of your party members being able to even hit certain enemy types. All in all, I can't really recommend this game unless you're willing to adjust to a frustrating and somewhat opaque gameplay for the sake of what sounds like it could be a pretty solid old school JRPG story.

I gave it a go a while back, but while it seemed like I got pretty far into the game, or at least past a train part, it just felt that the story was going nowhere, and the characters were rather boring as well. The sprite work is pretty good, and I did like the environments at the least, both the old and the remastered. The hd mode character art did not appeal to me at all, so I kept that as mostly 16 bit. The combat mechanics had some neat ideas, but only in regards to boss battles. It makes normal encounters a slog. And maybe I didn't get far enough into the game, bu it felt like the last two party members felt like they were just there, maybe as chaperones? And why the hell is juggler guy only able at healing during combat? That is so dumb... To be honest, it is impressive what they pulled off in making a homebrew genesis game in 2010, and the whole missible content is because of limitations the team had to deal with. And I did chuckle with the dragon kissing scene. I don't want to be harsh on this game, but I can't recommend this.
