About Prison City
Prison City is an action-packed side-scrolling shooter where players use chakrams and grenades to battle through various levels, defeat bosses, and uncover hidden upgrades. The game features customizable gameplay and difficulty, a "Boss Rush" mode for players to compete for the best time, and an excellent retro soundtrack by Raddland Studios.

Prison City is packed with nods and homages to classic action movies and games from the 80s and 90s, including iconic one-liners, memorable characters, and familiar gameplay mechanics. Fans of the action genre will feel right at home.

Players will fight their way across an entire city, grappling through 8+ level zones, like a Freeway, a Factory, and a Nature Preserve. Each zone presents its own unique challenges, from environmental hazards to powerful bosses that will put your skills to the test.

The crime-ridden and crumbling city of Detroit was evacuated in 1995 and became an impenetrable mega-prison. In the present-day (of 1997) an evil group has infiltrated and seized control. Former cop Hal Bruzer is called back from retirement by his mentor, "The Chief," to take down the "Techno-Terrorists" and their appointed Wardens... to hopefully, bring the 'spirit' of Detroit back!!

Prison City is an incredible game that captures the look of a classic NES platformer while adding more advanced controls, movement and combat mechanics. The gameplay feels fast, smooth and responsive and there are plenty of useful power ups in each stage. The enemy placement, bosses and nonstop pace make it seriously challenging, and some of the achievements are ridiculous. There is no way I can complete even one stage without taking damage!!! I had better luck with the car smashing mini game. Overall Prison City is a fantastic game, and one I'd highly recommend!2 found this helpful
Disclaimer
I decided to drop the game on last boss. EDIT: I since finished the last boss too after learning unclear ways of dodging some of its attacks, but it didn't change my opinion.
TL;DR
I did first level on classic. It was fine. The second level was so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ long, tedious, unfun and badly designed that I decided to drop to modern. Level 7 broke me and I wanted to refund it, but I was at 2.2 hours. I reached last boss and decided I was done after I couldn't dodge some of its attacks for 8 lives straight. Good bones and presentation are squandered by terrible level design and plain unfairness. If you are going to say 'it's supposed to be unfair, it's evoking NES!' You haven't played NES games. There are some notoriously difficult NES games like Ninja Gaiden, true, but plenty are tough but fair. This game is not fair.
Description
Classic platformer. There's nothing here that would make it unique and it doesn't necessarily have to be.
Pros:
+ Artstyle Gorgeous pixel art, areas are distinct, sprites look good. + Music Chiptune goodness.
Cons:
- Unreadable backgrounds I had PLENTY of situations where thes…1 found this helpful
Awesome game! If you grew up with an NES or Master System - or probably some of those 8-bit Micros too - you should play this game. In other words, if you need reading glasses, buy this.1 found this helpful
Prison City is a retro-inspired action platformer that successfully recreates the intensity and challenge of classic 8-bit and 16-bit arcade games while still feeling polished enough for modern players. From its opening moments, the game fully embraces old-school action design, combining fast-paced combat, demanding platforming, over-the-top cyberpunk storytelling, and stylish pixel art into a tightly focused experience filled with nonstop energy. Rather than relying solely on nostalgia, the game carefully modernizes its mechanics in ways that preserve the spirit of classic action games without dragging along every outdated frustration associated with them. The story takes place in a dystopian version of Detroit where crime and corruption have spiraled completely out of control. The city has effectively become a giant prison zone ruled by violent factions and dangerous techno-terrorists. Former police officer Hal Bruzer is pulled back into action to fight through the city and eliminate the criminal leaders responsible for the chaos. The narrative intentionally embraces cheesy action movie tropes and exaggerated futuristic absurdity, creating an atmosphere that feels heavily inspir…
Awesome visuals and chiptunes, the rest is mediocre at best.
One of the most solid action titles I've played indie or otherwise. What makes this game for me is the level design and how well it's done. You can go through most areas and through each room from either direction 90% of the time and have it feel natural. They're all designed to take advantage of your chakram weapon and how you can angle and rotate them, the enemy placement is perfect. The bosses have spectacle, the ones from the Factory and Stadium stages being standouts. Appreciated the game's extra modes after beating it, too, another way to play is always nice. Highly recommended.
