Stella Pastoris

This game reminds me a lot of HighFleet. At first I thought it would be a sandbox game (which it kind of is?), but it really isn't that at all. It's more of an artistic city builder. Like HighFleet I think this game is entirely misunderstood. It's meant to be a brief and desperate experience. I have noticed a lack of guides and that most achievements aren't unlocked by 99% of the players. People seem unsure what to build, but I think it's rather straight forward. Like the store page says there are various endings based on what spirit you choose to align with (or not). Your build order pretty much just boils down to what you need to satisfy the unique structure each Spirit requires. You can build defensive structures as well, but the whole point of the game is to build one of those unique structures. Don't get me wrong, this isn't an easy task. Your health pool is limited and you're unable to replenish it. You're under constant assault by machine spirits and your followers are unreliable at best. I don't often leave steam reviews. This game hit me directly in the old school 1 bit mac gaming nostalgia. Stella Pastoris is a solid little god game/ city builder that is dripping in theme and atmosphere. After launching the game I was a bit surprised by how small everything was but setting my main screen to a lower resolution that issue resolved itself. Learning the game took a handful of failed attempts and I have yet to grasp everything. This is down to the games writing being intentionally obtuse to fit in the games world. While a little fiddly I think it does its job quite well. If I had any real criticism I wish the game came with a PDF manual. It plays and feels old school and this can be a negative. Even with the help of the in game tutorial things still feel weird when learning. An interesting and fun city builder with a unique art style and designs reminiscent of 40K. I wish that the gameplay was better explained because quite a few times I was entirely unsure of how to solve certain problems, and additionally the monochrome heavily pixelated graphics can make it difficult to parse what is being seen. However, it is still quite fun and I hope that the developers create more games in the future and get more attention.
