There are some special moves your troll can perform which are shown on the loading screens. On startup you have to choose the Super Nintendo or (unreleased prototype) Genesis version. The SNES version looks slightly better with some graphical flourishes that are missing in the Genesis version like the trolls' victory pose after killing a boss. By default on PS4 controller the "start" button was R2 and the jump button is R1, so hit Escape and rebind the controls if you're actually going to play this. Also contrary to what that really long negative review (which has comments disabled) of the game says, by the time this game came out in 1994 the Ninja Turtles had been in decline for years (the awful third movie had come out the year before). It does contain the ROMs of the Genesis and SNES versions! It is in the "res" directory and the filename is "game". That is the ROM file. Just rename it to stone_protectors.smc or sth (in case of the SNES version) and load it with ZSNES or SNES9X and it will play perfectly without most of the issues of this PC port. If you have to pick one of the out-of-the-box versions, pick the Genesis one as it has slightly more fitting (and less lag-distorted) music and less input dropping. Play the ROMs instead if you can - they are the vastly superior experience. The game is about 3 hours long and has next to no replay value. It definitely was not worth the 100 bucks back in the day, though properly emulated it might be worth a couple of bucks. It does have a two-player coop (and "hostility") support. Also 1 Player + CPU and some Tournament Mode I did not care to try because it would have required setting up Player 2 controls. The out-of-the-box executable stuff has a lot of issues: sound popping with both versions and runtime cycling issues with the SNES version (read: heavy input drops when anything is happening and game runs too slowly in full screen mode). I miss this game dearly, and it's a bit underrated, especially the music. Sadly, the emulation software being used has a slight audio latency and lacks controls for the 'L' and 'R' shoulder buttons. Without these, you can't use certain special moves, nor can you share health with the other player. And the 'Start' button doesn't pause in-game, but rather brings up the overlay to adjust controls and window size. The game is short but great. The software that runs the game could be better. Discounted or not, I'm getting a refund. I can't recommend the software used to emulate Stone Protectors.
