World's End Club

Let me start this review by saying that this game is not for everyone out there. Gameplay wise, this game is basically a disaster. I wish they would have spent more time on the visual aspects, because that's pretty rough a lot of the time too (except for the UI, like that's legitimately so good). Back in the late 1500's, you had the globe theatre, where Romeo and Juliet was played. The stage didn't really use many props, and the audience's imagination had to make a good visualizer in their head of what the story looks like. That's a good way to explain this game: an amazing story, but the medium in which it's told just requires a little imagination. If you want better gameplay, go play Mario Bros. or some other platformer. But if you're looking for a great life-changing gem of a story, it's right here waiting for you. I really hope this game gets some remaster or even series in the future, because all the potential is right there.

Just barely passable game, though coming from these devs I expected something a lot better. The story of World's End Club is an all-ages roadtrip through a destroyed world that rehashes several elements from previous Uchikoshi and Kodaka games. The majority of the cast is simple but carried by one-note gimmicks that may not land for everyone (very Kodaka), while the overarching plot is full of sci-fi mysteries with reveals that change our understanding of the world and its characters (mostly Uchikoshi with a bit of Kodaka, and easily the best part of the game). I'd get more specific, but I'd have to spoil both this game and these devs' other games which would be a shame. That said, I'd argue that these borrowed elements feel like a watered down version of what we see in these developers' respective games. The twists and reveals can be fun, but often don't have the impact I feel they should. Perhaps this is in part because the mysteries of the story are rarely in focus so we're never invested in figuring out what's going on. I loved World's End Club and it is in my top 10 favorite games. The story and characters are super interesting. I love everyone's designs and the voice acting really brings them to life. The twists and turns of the story always surprised me. I would recommend people experience this game but not play it per say. I thought the game play felt clunky a lot of the time unfortunately. If you're unsure if you'd like how this game controls/plays there is always the demo. But I would say watch someone play this game on Youtube because in my opinion the game play segments are not fun nor interesting enough to justify playing it yourself.
