About AWAY: Journey to the Unexpected
AWAY: Journey to the Unexpected is a love letter to japanese animation made by a two-person team. It invites you to a very unusual journey to a charming and wacky 3D world populated by 2D characters.
AWAY is a short light-hearted story mixing action, silly discussions, rogue-lite elements and smashing a bunch of cute creatures to overcome every obstacle in your way.
- A 3 to 5 hours journey around a colorful world featuring unique visuals, with 2D characters living in a 3D world.
- Unravel a funny and light-hearted story, with just the right pinch of rogue-lite elements.
- Recruit up to 8 quirky characters, each with their own unique abilities
- An anime-themed soundtrack composed by Kazuhiko Naruse and sung by Aya Majiro!
“Dear Villagers, we may have released some evil forces while working. Sorry, be safe”, say the Labiworks signs all around.
Your neighborhood seems to require some serious monster cleaning. AWAY could have been one of these bloody FPS if only you were not a harmless kid armed with... a wooden stick.
As you throw yourself into danger investigating about missing parents and very strange events happening, you will have to find allies. Luckily enough your neighborhood is full of odd but powerful characters.
You may not be deadly but you’re super good at making friends! From the mine-throwing angry tree to the missile-launching robot or the fireballing yet short-sighted sorcerer, you’ll be in good company!
See the world through your allies’ eyes, first person style, whenever you call upon them. Beware, it can be quite a visual experience! And don’t exhaust them too fast, kiddo!
AWAY: Journey to the Unexpected was made by a two-person team composed of Aurelien Regard (self-made video game developer who previously released The Next Penelope) and Jim Gennisson (former level designer on Rayman Legends and Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom).

Alright, the game isn't bad...it's just weird. Gameplay makes me thinks of Vermintide, since you can only attack with a melee weapon, but the combat is not very good because your weapon range is really short and often you will take a hit trying to hit the enemy. Other attacks comes from friends you can party, up to 3 per run, and they have their own weapons. The part that really makes this a bad game is the fact that you need stars to open doors to new areas. That's ok. BUT... To get those stars you need to recruit those before mentioned friends, and to do this you need to answer a series of questions, and if you choose ONE wrong answer the conversation will take a path that will not allow you to recruit that character, UNTIL THE NEXT RUN. So, if you have a guide, you can pretty much finish the game in 3 runs, something like 3 hours max. But if you don't have a guide, it will be trial and error until you find out what are the correct answers for each character and recruit everyone so you can unlock the final door and beat the final boss. I never seen a game do this before. Lock progression behind a series of question and answers, which have nothing to do with skills, or items, o…2 found this helpful
I had to insert the following start up parameters to get the game to stop crashing at the boot-up (thanks to Bing AI for the quick solution): -force-d3d11 -force-feature-level-10-0 A developer can set stuff on the programming side so that it can automatically switch to functional settings in case the game requires specific DirectX 10 shader settings. This should not be a user side issue. The error log output is completely worthless because it only says that an error occurred in UnityPlayer dll and nothing else. A little future proofing goes a long way. The game itself is okay. A lot of it involves the same process of timing melee attacks and backing up for common enemies and circle-strafing for the boss ones. It gets dull fast.
Its a nice friendly little game. Sure the controls are a little wonky but its okay when you get used to it. Its a fun little project. Im glad that games like this gets made. I feel that the developers had fun making it. Its not the best game ever, but it does not need to be. Its nice and fun.
Its a nice short game.
It looks pretty, where is the game tho
😐 5/10 - A Fun Idea That Never Quite Comes Together Away: Journey to the Unexpected has a lot of charm on the surface. Its colorful art style, upbeat atmosphere, and quirky cast of characters immediately make it stand out. The game tries to blend first-person exploration with roguelite elements and light RPG mechanics, creating something unique that feels different from most games in the genre. Unfortunately, the execution doesn't always live up to the concept. The biggest issue is that many of the systems feel underdeveloped. Combat is simple and often repetitive, progression can feel inconsistent, and the roguelite elements don't provide enough variety to keep repeated runs exciting. While recruiting characters to join your adventure is a neat idea, it rarely feels impactful enough to carry the experience. The humor and personality are hit-or-miss. Some characters are genuinely memorable and funny, while others feel forgettable. The story exists mostly as a backdrop for the adventure and never becomes particularly engaging. To its credit, the game has a positive, lighthearted energy that's hard to dislike. It's clear the developers had a creative vision, and there…
