Pillars of Light

Decent short puzzle game using colored light. The actual puzzles are pretty straightforward with a few secrets thrown in. Respectable story as well considering a development team of one person.

[Traduction française en-dessous.] (evaluation based on the test of two players) Puzzles inside the game are understandable. They are not too long or too harsh. However they are not easy. The different bricks of gameplay are well introduced one at a time. And they offer some interesting new gameplays, they are not an extension of a previous one. It overpass my expectations after playing the first level. Some puzzles are based on colours, so beware if you are clour-blind, it can he a little tricky. For the completionist there is a secret room to unlock, even when being alert and cautious to details we did not manage to unlock it on the first try, you have to search thoroughly some levels. One of us play the game on an X360 gamepad and it goes well. The other played it on keyboard and computer mouse and it goes well. A great little puzzle game from a solo developer that reminded me a little of The Talos Principal which just happens to be one of my all time favs. A little rough around the edges with some minor grammatical issues early on but the main story had no such issues of note. Consistent visuals and nice music throughout. Puzzles start off easy enough but do grow in complexity although never too taxing and still perfect for a relaxing play through. Overall a very enjoyable play though.

I'm going to be blunt on this one: this doesn't feel like a proper game, rather like a poorly finished student project. I usually try to find positive things to say about any games I play because I understand the work going into making one but let's be real there isn't much to save here. The music was nice and that's it. Animations where rigid and the platforming is clunky, the control often felt unresponsive. The lighting, which is supposed to be the central theme of the game, is poorly done, especially in the darker level where you can barely see what's going on. Every textures and objects in the game lack polish and it borders on lazy. The screenshot and video preview feels like they've been carefully taken to avoid showing how poorly implemented the game feels. There is no story per say, nothing to unravel and the ending was abrupt. The obvious boss fight you expect, to put every mechanics you've learned to the test, just never comes. I felt empty when the credit rolled. I have played clunky games in the past and I wouldn't have minded if at least the puzzles were enjoyable. To say that they feel unrewarding is an understatement. I initially played the demo a way back and enjoyed the concept of using light as the main component of puzzles. It was something different and I picked up the full game during Summer sale. Level design is pretty nice, each level is distinctive from the others and the puzzles increase in difficulty as you go along but not too crazily. The only negative I can really give it is I wish there was little bit more to the story/lore, as someone else has commented. A major plus is the dev who created this game is very attentive and responded to my questions very quickly and helpfully! I would recommend this game if you want an interesting puzzle game to play :)
