In the months after the Great War the Europe stood on the brink of a new conflict. Barely the armistice in Compiègne was signed, Soviet Russia organized an military operation westwards with the goal to ingnite the revolution in Germany. After Germany had fallen the rest of the Europe would follow.
Comrades and Barons: Gates of Freedom is a turn-based wargame that lets you relive the battles of little known Soviet offensive through Baltics and following battles that led to creation of Latvian Republic.
Experience the bloody battles of little known part of the Russian Civil War - fight to export the revolution to Europe through Baltics, fight to uphold the old world order, fight for the existence of the new national states - all of which is known as Latvian War of Independence.
The first stage of war was the operation of the Red Army with the goal to reach the border of the former Russian empire and then invade Germany. This goal was almost reached: collapsing German Army was not capable to offer resistance, while local armies were not prepared for the war yet.
The next stage started when German Army managed to build defences in front of Germany's borders. New regular units and freikorps were sent to Latvia, help was offered to organize local armies. The Red Army was pushed away to the east.
The same Germans who just had driven bolshewiks away now started to act, lead by imperialist goals. Estonia and Latvia had to fight for their independence. The most important battle for Estonian War of Independence took place in Latvia, near Cēsis.
After Latvian Army had organized in liberated part of Latvia, it inherited not only the front against the Red Army, but a new front, that had formed in the west in form of West-Russian Army. This army with its allies tried to wipe out Latvia. Latvian Army finally had to free Latvia from foreign armies in the west.
Ultimately Latvian Army could turn to its main enemy - the Red Army that still occupied large part of Latvia. This operation in the beginning of 1920 was executed together with the Polish Army.

Great game! Kind of different in style, but certainly easy to learn and intriguing. It covers a historical period little known - esp. rarely covered by games. Definitely worth the price! I hope to see more from this developer.7 found this helpful

Cool historical game detailing a conflict not nearly talked about enough! Wish the strategy/tactics side had more depth, for example logistics, machine guns armored cars etc. The armored train is essentially just artillery that can only move on tracks, when in reality they were capable of supply, troop transport and rapid redeployment. Also would be interesting if there were more difficulty options like hard to make the AI smarter, or hardcore with limited map visibility.1 found this helpful
Comrades and Barons: Gates of Freedom is a well-researched game that sheds light on the topic of Latvian War of Independence. The game features many accurate details, such as the specific names of every single unit, an information of their force and morale, detailed map of Latvia and neighbouring regions, where landscape features such as forests, fields, rivers, bogs, cities come into strategy. The goal is to capture all the important points on the map in a certain number of turns. There are six campaigns, each with multiple missions, and they do not happen in the blink of an eye. Despite not having played wargames before, I found this game very addicting, as I quickly got the grip on the mechanics, which are not too difficult, but are challenging to master, as there have been multiple missions in which I did not succeed at first. I would also like to praise the art style of the game, there are nicely designed figures and the style of the map seems to have been influenced from the maps of early 20th century. The only thing that I would want to change about the design is the logo, as I find it quite plain and cheap, certainly not reflecting the actual nice design and quality of the…1 found this helpful
