A ruined piece of art, but one with a giant hidden gem within the files
For years I keep thinking about this one strange demo game I played in the late nineties. It was hard to play and I couldn't even win a race, but it had this awesome soundtrack. I can't even say with certainty that it was Xtreme G, but Imagine my exitement finding this game was actually made and potentially been ported and available on Steam. Sadly my excitement disappeared fast after purchase, None of my controllers work, the keyboard controls are just plain weird and some parts of the game bug out like crazy making the game a pain to play. The problems are too numerous to note individually.
So, this port is a mess, why the positive review?
Well, it's very simple really. That soundtrack I remembered from over 20 years ago? Hidden in the files is not just the soundtrack of one game, but FIVE! For some reason the devs dumped the soundtracks of the entire series to this giant dumpster fire. Not just PC, but even console soundtracks are just sitting right there, ready to be added to your own media player. So Instead of wasting your time trying to get this crappy port to work, ju…5 found this helpful
Keyboard working in the menu but not in race / controller working in race but not in the menu (and too much sensible)2 found this helpful
Don't buy. Bad port and abandoned. Also, CONSOLE port with bad control support - chef's kiss.1 found this helpful
Sometimes it disables keyboard input at the start of the race, this always happens when above the default resolution It does not work with my Series X controller, unless I use Steam input, however that also becomes disabled along with the keyboard The frame rate is locked at 30 fps, this makes it very unpleasant when turning or going through areas with lightning or flashing lights
Extreme-G 2 is a futuristic combat racing title developed by Acclaim Cheltenham and published by Throwback Entertainment. Originally released during the late 1990s and later brought to Steam for modern audiences, the game remains a distinctive entry in the arcade racing genre thanks to its intense emphasis on speed, aggressive weapon-based competition, and imaginative science-fiction settings. Rather than pursuing realism, it embraces a vision of high-tech motorcycle racing where competitors tear across futuristic circuits at astonishing velocities while exchanging devastating attacks in a battle for first place. The game's most impressive feature is its extraordinary sensation of speed. From the moment a race begins, Extreme-G 2 delivers a relentless rush that few racing games can match. The futuristic bikes accelerate to incredible levels, creating a constant feeling that players are barely maintaining control as the scenery races past. This overwhelming pace is a defining aspect of the experience, transforming every corner, jump, and obstacle into a test of concentration and reflexes. The famous sonic boom effect generated at top speeds further enhances the excitement, making e…
So, to get this out of the way, this is a port, not a remake. You're getting a 1998 n64 racer by a dead dev; it's a miracle it works at all. That being said, the framerate (hardware allowing) is above the n64 original and there's been some polish to the lighting and reflections. Also for some reason the dev saw fit to include 5 whole OST's from the Extreme-G franchise with the install in readable format. I can't fathom why, but god bless em for it. The original n64 OST is amazing. Velofire (the pink bike) has been re-skinned for some reason, if that's a deal-breaker. There's also no splitscreen multiplayer; if you are one of the 12 people still playing n64 racing games in 2026 and another of the 12 happens to live in your house, emulate the original. You are required to use a keyboard during menus which sucks, but I get it, technical limitations in an ancient engine. You can use a controller in actual gameplay, though, by setting a controller preference in the launcher menu. ==========
Workarounds/troubleshooting:
There is a compatibility issue with getting the game to recognize controllers (which you should be using; the game is extremely twitchy). If y…
