Collection of 2 shoot em up games from the early noughties with a newly added timeless mode (not sure if that counts as a seperate entry). To me this genre feels kinda all the same, this game is no exception. It's fine to shoot enemies and avoid being hit by bullets for an hour or two but I personally wouldn't stick around for much longer. Local multiplayer is a nice bonus tho.19 found this helpful
Another old school shooter with great presentation and even better gameplay. This is essentially a collection of two games in one package plus timeless game mode with more modern approach and 3D graphics. Whole game is made in oriental style setting with some sci-fi vibe like futuristic vehicles and mechs. Plenty of characters to choose from each with complementary stats to each other. During batlle you're able to charge and release your swords to deflect enemy bullets. Collect shards along the way to use your Vasara and smash enemies aside with the bombs. Engaging music and nice arcade sounds adds to the whole. Difficulty wise you put as many credits as you like however to complete the final stage you only use one credit - no checkpoints. Support for 2 player coop mode and 4 player in timeless mode. Inherently a legacy from era of the great arcade shooters!
17 found this helpful
Just saying, but I do have a curator page. If you like my remarks about games, you can find more of them here: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44130985-TDP%27s-Gaming-Escapades
I always get this thought that while western developers were always afraid of new ideas through time, eastern devs had not shied away from trying new things. Like, what if we had robots in the wild west? Or what if the president of United States piloted a mech and fought against the vice president? VASARA games combine science fiction with Japan's history, creating this interesting mashup of mechanical beasts being piloted by the samurai. A premise that has ended up in creation of two unique shmups. And a collection that... well... let's talk about them, shall we?
Your usual arcade shmup, but you can melee
The basics of VASARA 1 and 2 are the same as other shmup games. But they do offer a unique mechanic in the form of melee attacks. Each character has a melee attack with bullet clearing properties which is accessible by holding down the shot button and releasing it after a short time. The games even offer a powered up version of melee attack as a separate offensive/de…3 found this helpful
✍️ A Theory of Shmup Evolution By: Joseph Salomonsen Gradius → R‑Type → Darius → Toaplan → Cave / Treasure / G.rev 🟨 Foundations — Designed Space Gradius (Konami, 1985) The origin of control: resource systems, checkpoints, and authored space. The player shapes their ship to survive the level. R‑Type (Irem, 1987) The Force system: space becomes weaponized. A slow, methodical philosophy—positioning over reflex. Darius (Taito, 1987) Branching structure and spectacle. The first step toward non-linear shmup identity. 🟥 Line 1 — Density → Pattern → Bullet Hell (Toaplan → Cave) Twin Cobra (Toaplan, 1987) The definitive military shooter. Discipline, routing, survival. (my personal fave) Truxton / Tatsujin (Toaplan, 1988) The birth of the “Mega-Bomb” aesthetic—power as expression. Batsugun (Toaplan, 1993) The bridge to Bullet Hell. Density begins to dominate space. DoDonPachi (Cave, 1997) The system is complete. Patterns become language. Mushihimesama (Cave, 2004) The organic extreme. Bullets form ecosystems, not just obstacles. Deathsmiles (Cave, 2007) A divergence: horizontal design fused with atmosphere. Bullet hell becomes mood, not just system. 🟩 Line 2 …1 found this helpful
VASARA Collection is a dynamic resurrection of two long-lost Japanese arcade gems that blend the intensity of classic bullet-hell shooters with a uniquely stylized feudal-sci-fi aesthetic. Developed and published by QUByte Interactive, this compilation gathers the original VASARA from 2000 and its sequel, VASARA 2 from 2001, both of which were once exclusive to Japanese arcades. Their arrival on Steam finally opens the door for a global audience to experience these high-energy, mechanically rich shooters that had long existed as cult favorites. The collection also introduces an additional “Timeless” mode, a modernized 3D reimagining designed to offer something new to both veterans and newcomers. Together, these elements form a package that aims to celebrate the series’ history while pushing it into a broader modern context. The gameplay that defines the VASARA titles is intense, fast-paced, and distinct from the standard formula of the genre. Rather than relying solely on ranged attacks, players wield both long-range firepower and a charged melee strike known as the VASARA attack—a close-range sword technique that can not only slice through enemies but also deflect incoming bullet…1 found this helpful
