About Familia

✦ AI summary

Familia is a story-driven RPG where a fractured family of warriors and intellectuals must reunite and fight back against an oppressive Empire across an expansive narrative with 11 playable characters. The game blends classic RPG mechanics with original pixel art, digital paintings, and an acclaimed original soundtrack to deliver an innovative emotional journey that balances intimate family drama with large-scale conflict.

Tension has been building for millennia, and war is on the horizon. At the center of the war, a small family tries their best to find each other, to be there for each other.

Familia tells stories from relatable characters in an unrelatable world. Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and others seek to take back what's rightfully theirs from the oppressive Empire.

The Father

The mysterious man awoke in the desert, not knowing who he was. Will he find his way home?

Constantly assumed by others to be harmless, Koko exudes limitless potential. Despite being an intellectual genius, she lacks physical strength compared to the rest of her family. She spends most of her time with her Grandma, whom she adores.

Poki, The Son

Poki is a martial arts prodigy who longs for acknowledgment. When not looking after Koko, he trains constantly. He feels he should be deployed on missions with his famed father despite being a teenager.

Keeria, The Mother

Keeria is considered by many to be one of the world’s greatest assassins, a title she does distains. She wants to live in isolation with her family for the rest of her life. She has sworn off fighting, but she may be unable to uphold her vow.

RPG Maker strikes again! Familia is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality assets (notably most of the assets here seem to be custom instead of just copy + pasted RPG Maker stock assets... but they're still very low quality) coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware, the game features extremely low quality 2D retro pixel art (original or not), looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable qual…

The characters die in every fight, even against the weakest opponents. I am also unable to download Act 2. I have played turn-based RPGs since Phantasy Star. I even beat Dark Phallus, who was a pain in the arse. Phantasy Star II was also difficult.

If you're into old skool style retro turn-based jrpgs like the original Final Fantasy games, then check out Familia. The developer has put a lot of passion into this homage to classic gaming.

The game is good and charming overall, however, I ran to this issue where my screen would freeze on fullscreen, and I wouldn't mind it if it only happened once. I could clearly hear that the game didn't freeze as characters still made noises, however I had to force the game to shut down, having to replay the parts I already played. That's my only gripe with it, and hopefully it will get fixed because the game was interesting enough that I wanted to play more of it.
