RPG Maker strikes again! Familia is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality assets (notably most of the assets here seem to be custom instead of just copy + pasted RPG Maker stock assets... but they're still very low quality) coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. Like most RPG Maker shovelware, the game features extremely low quality 2D retro pixel art (original or not), looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. Familia is a deliberately old-fashioned JRPG that draws heavily from the spirit of 1990s console role-playing games while building its adventure around something more personal than a conventional battle between heroes and villains. Its story centers on four protagonists caught in a conflict that has been developing for generations, with an oppressive Empire standing between them and the homeland they hope to reclaim. More importantly, the narrative repeatedly returns to family. Parents, children, siblings, and other relatives are separated by circumstances and struggle to find one another, giving the larger conflict an emotional foundation beyond simply saving the world. The game was developed by Maui Game Studio and Code Mora, with Maui Interactive, LLC serving as publisher. Its inspirations are immediately recognizable, particularly the early Final Fantasy games, but the experience is not solely interested in copying familiar fantasy adventures. The characters die in every fight, even against the weakest opponents. I am also unable to download Act 2. I have played turn-based RPGs since Phantasy Star. I even beat Dark Phallus, who was a pain in the arse. Phantasy Star II was also difficult.
