Is DayZ on Game Pass? What the subscription covers
Playze Staff · Oct 9, 2026

Is DayZ on Game Pass? Yes — and it has been for long enough that the more useful question is which tier covers it, and whether subscribing is actually cheaper than owning it. The answer depends on whether you play on console or on PC, and the two cases point in opposite directions.
Start with what it would cost you to own instead. Across the 101 days we have tracked DayZ since 18 June 2026, the median cheapest offer anywhere was $12.77, and the lowest single price we recorded was $9.70 at Gameseal on 21 August 2026. Only 20 of those 101 days sat within a quarter of that floor. Read on 9 October 2026, the cheapest offer in our record is nearer the top of that range than the bottom — which is the single most important input into the subscribe-or-buy decision, and the one nobody else will tell you.

Is DayZ on Game Pass, and on which tiers?
Microsoft's own store listing for DayZ is the only source worth trusting here, because the tier names have changed twice in two years and most of the articles you will find are describing a structure that no longer exists.
As the listing stands, DayZ appears under "Included in these subscriptions" against Essential, Premium, Ultimate and the PC-only plan. In the edition comparison on the same page, the Game Pass version is labelled "Included with Game Pass Premium". The listing also says it is cloud playable on Essential, Premium and Ultimate, so you can start it on a phone or a browser without a download.
That is a broad set of tiers by Game Pass standards — plenty of games sit on Ultimate alone. If you already subscribe to anything, there is a good chance DayZ is sitting in your library unclaimed.

The console catch that changes the maths
Here is the line people miss, quoted from the same store page: "Online multiplayer on console requires XBOX Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate (subscriptions sold separately)."
DayZ is a game you play on servers. That is the whole design — the tension comes from the other eighty people on the map, not from the zombies. So on Xbox, that sentence means a subscription is part of the cost of playing DayZ whether or not you buy the game. Buying a copy outright does not free you from the sub; it just means you are paying for both.
Which makes the console decision unusually simple. If you are on Xbox and you want to play DayZ, subscribe. Owning it on top only makes sense if you expect to still be playing after you cancel, and since you cannot play online after you cancel, that scenario mostly does not exist.
On PC the answer flips
PC has no equivalent requirement. Online play on PC does not need a subscription, so the PC-only Game Pass plan is a straight rental: you pay monthly, you get the game, and when you stop paying it goes away.
That makes owning genuinely competitive on PC, and our price record is what decides it. DayZ has two completely separate markets — the official channel, which holds a flat price and then cuts hard during Steam's seasonal events, and the key resellers, which grind downwards continuously. The gap between them on this title is one of the widest we track. A month or two of subscription fees is in the same territory as the keyshop floor we have recorded, so the question becomes how long you expect to play.

DayZ's sessions are long and mostly uneventful, which is the point — and a reason the rental maths rarely works out. (Official Steam screenshot)
DayZ is not a weekend game. A single run can take hours and most of it is walking, so people who stick with it tend to stick with it for years. If that is you, own it. If you suspect you will bounce off the first time you lose four hours of loot to someone you never saw, rent it.
What Game Pass does not include
The subscription gives you the base game, and the base game is now generous — it carries both Chernarus and Livonia, the second of which used to be paid DLC and is not any more.
What it does not give you is Frostline, the Sakhal expansion, which remains a separate purchase. Microsoft's store bundles it into a DayZ Cool Edition listing rather than including it in the subscription. If Sakhal's frozen archipelago is the reason you are here, budget for it on top of whatever you pay for the base game — and check the live figure on the game page rather than any number in an article.

Be careful with one other listing while you are shopping. A DayZ Livonia Edition still circulates on resellers, and it was originally priced as base game plus a paid map. Livonia is in the base game now, so on most storefronts that edition adds nothing over the standard one. Work out what you are actually getting before paying a premium for it.

If you would rather own a survival game outright
Game Pass is a poor fit for the survival genre generally, because these are games you play for hundreds of hours over years rather than finishing in a fortnight. Three alternatives we track that you buy once:
- Project Zomboid — the deepest simulation of the three, and one of the cheapest games we track at its floor. Isometric rather than first-person, and single-player works properly.
- SCUM — the closest thing to DayZ's loop with more systems on top, and a much narrower price range than DayZ's.
- Rust — more base-building and raiding, far less walking, and a wipe cycle that resets everyone's progress by design.

If you want to stay inside the subscription, Grounded is the survival game Game Pass does best — it has a proper ending, which makes the rental model fit for once.
The bottom line
On Xbox: subscribe, and do not buy the game as well. The store page's own small print means you are paying for a subscription either way, so paying twice is the only mistake available to you here.
On PC: subscribe if you are unsure whether DayZ is for you, because a month costs less than our recorded floor and DayZ loses a lot of people in the first ten hours. If you already know you like it, buy it — and wait for a seasonal event rather than buying today, because our record has the price nearer the top of its range than the bottom as of 9 October 2026.
Either way, check the live figures on the DayZ game page before committing. For more on the tiers themselves, read Xbox Game Pass tiers explained; for whether the game is for you at all, is DayZ worth it; and for the buying routes if you decide to own it, DayZ cheap: which edition to buy. Our broader view on renting versus owning is in the best games on PC Game Pass right now.
