About A Tale of Silent Depths

✦ AI summary

A Tale of Silent Depths is a tactical roguelike where you captain a massive submarine Ark across a procedurally generated ocean, managing resources, building drone squads, and making high-stakes decisions about whether to trade, raid, explore, or hunt for forbidden secrets. Navigate treacherous turn-based battles against pirates, rival Arks, and eldritch horrors while uncovering the mystery of humanity's apocalypse, with every run offering vastly different builds and playstyles in a world that remembers and reacts to your choices.

Generations after the apocalypse, humanity survives inside colossal Arks: floating societies sealed in steel. You are an Ark captain: you choose where to sail, who to trust, what to hunt, and what secrets to leave buried. The ocean is procedurally generated and full of ruins, routes, and threats, some human, some not. The world has drowned, and humanity clings to survival in the crushing dark. In A Tale of Silent Depths, you are the Captain of an Ark: a massive, mobile submarine base that is your home, your fortress, and your last negotiating chip in a dead ocean.Command your Ark across a sprawling open-ocean sandbox where pressure is just a number and safety is a lie. Explore the depths to harvest scarce resources, salvage forgotten wrecks, and dive into ancient ruins for relics and blueprints that can change the balance of power. Build and customize a fleet of drones, who will be your frontline and combat support, then deploy them in tense turn-based tactical battles against pirates, sea-creatures, rival Arks… and things that were never meant to surface. This is a world that reacts to you. Trade to grow rich, raid to take what you need, uncover secrets no one wants found, or gamble everything chasing horrors beyond comprehension, because sometimes the deep doesn’t just hide monsters. Sometimes it remembers you. Every decision reshapes your resources, your relationships, and the risks waiting out in the dark.In A Tale of Silent Depths, you’re free to be a trader, an archaeologist, a pirate... or something in between. The only rule is simple:Survive.

Explore an enormous, procedurally generated open world

Chart a living ocean that changes every run: shifting routes, new points of interest, hidden wrecks, sunken ruins, and dangerous territories controlled by pirates and rival Arks. Push deeper for rarer salvage and stranger discoveries: the most valuable secrets are rarely found in safe waters.

Outthink your enemies in complex turn-based tactical battles

Every fight is a puzzle under pressure. Positioning, range, line-of-sight, terrain hazards, status effects, and limited resources all matter. Decide when to commit, when to retreat, and when to gamble. One bad engagement can cost drones, supplies... or the Ark itself.

Roguelike progression with endless build variety

No two captains survive the same way. Each run offers a wealth of abilities, upgrades, equipment, and synergies, letting you craft specialized drone squads, captain loadouts, and Ark systems. Experiment with high-risk glass cannons, tanky control builds, stealthy scavengers, support-focused fleets, or weird hybrid strategies that only make sense when the right parts align.

A dangerous bestiary with unique behaviors and skills

The Ocean isn’t just full of enemies: it’s full of problems. Predators that stalk you across zones, pirates that adapt to your tactics, and deep-sea anomalies that punish predictable play. Learn patterns, identify threats, counter their strengths, and exploit their weaknesses. Or become another silent wreck on the seafloor.

Rich lore woven into exploration and survival

Piece together the truth behind the flood and what came after through logs, relics, factions, ruins, and whispered rumors traded in the dark. The deeper you go, the more the world’s history (and its contradictions) surface. Not everything down there is dead, and not every truth is safe to uncover.

✦ AI summary

A Tale of Silent Depths impresses players with its immersive underwater exploration, atmospheric pixel art, and engaging combat that creates tense, varied runs. However, the game suffers from notable bugs affecting settings and quest persistence, lacks sufficient content and direction to sustain engagement, and feels sparse with an underdeveloped world that leaves some players confused about what to do beyond basic exploration and combat.

Buggy (annoying not game breaking), poor performance (startup), missing quality of life, empty game world. I also expect to lose at some point in a roguelike. Bugs: - Settings not persisted. Set master volume to 1% (volume is quiet). Exit game, open game (volume is loud). Low volume is applied on entering settings menu (listed fixed 1.0.3). - Quests not persisted. Start a new game, ask smiley hat man where to find pirates (get entry "after the merritts"). Exit to menu, continue game. Journal is now empty (listed fixed 1.0.3). - Item duplication. In the inventory screen left click and drag an item to the hot bar (but do not release left mouse). Right click while holding left mouse (item is added to hotbar, but not removed from inventory) - Can't learn new recepies? Left/Right clicking in inventory does nothing, puting on my hotbar does not give a use option. This is how I found the item duplication, moving that stupid recepie around trying to find a place to use/learn it. Performance: - Loading AND closing the game takes a literal minute+ (on my computer). Due to the local LLM? I get that driving some logic with an LLM is nifty, but my first experience with this game was wonderin…

This game is genuinely interesting and has a lot of potential but for now it feels a bit like early access. I explored around for about an hour and couldn’t find anything to do other than fight tiny but mighty sea creatures and combat is difficult. I met some people in the very beginning but I couldn’t tell what they were and I didn’t get a quest from them after chatting so it was a bit confusing. The town didn’t really look like a town or anything but a gathering of rocks with a statue. Tentative thumbs up for the amount of potential this has and its design and theoretically will be super fun if more gets added to the map. For now it feels empty. Sunless Sea is one of my favorite games ever and I was hoping this would be similar. Steam deck players - it’s possible but not great. The text boxes are cut off and you have to update the AI settings to get it to run. I’m wondering now if that has anything to do with how empty it felt.

An incredibly dull game. There is little to nothing to do in this game. Tried to get my money back; but unfortunately I had gone over the amount of days I could return it in.

Did not expect to get this sucked in. You're captaining a sub in a dead ocean and every dive feels tense in the best way. Combat actually makes you think, no two runs play the same. Massive game from a small studio. Get it.

This is just a big nothing. You effectivelly overpowered from the get go, even against open world minibosses, 1 shot enemies drop rare heals that heal more then they do damage in 3 turns. You get drones that can solo any random encounter and you get like 5. Some weapons are discustingly broken even atop of all this. HUGE upgrades given away for scraps. Crafting is 100% pointless, just gives some rockets, that is even more broken and infinite drones esentially. Story is kinda broken, a guy says west 11 above 22? and the journal didnt write it up, even tho your hero actually says to listen to it and write it down lol. I couldnt find ♥♥♥♥, big empty everywhere. Coldnt follow the nonsensical quest. Game is so basic. Terrain broken. Unit cant move in combat if you deploy in a way that it is surrounded by units THAT moved away before ITS turn! What a joke. Practically everything outranges you, so you have to get in their faces. They do no dmg anyways. You supposed to explore A RANDOMLY GENERATED MAP yeah good luck with that. I get more out of exploring google earth. Your crew does ♥♥♥♥ all, stats is meh, hero selection is pointless, i couldnt even use my maingun and why the ♥♥♥♥ sonar c…
