Fragment (2025)

Fragment is a contemplative and emotionally focused experience that moves away from conventional gameplay structures in favor of something more introspective and symbolic. It places players inside a shifting, surreal world built around fragmented memories, where the objective is not clearly defined in traditional terms but instead revolves around understanding, reflection, and gradual emotional discovery. Rather than guiding players through a structured sequence of goals, the game invites them to explore at their own pace, piecing together meaning from scattered elements that represent different moments and states of mind. The gameplay is centered on exploration and the collection of memory fragments, each representing either positive or negative experiences. These fragments are not just items to gather but serve as the foundation of the game’s narrative progression. As players move through each environment, they encounter pieces of a life that has been broken into parts, and the act of collecting them becomes a form of reconstruction. Not so bad, but I don't like the concept. If you want to try different games, you can get this one, it's not expensive.

A journey through life, telling stories through interactions with both good and bad memories in a very minimalist way. If you enjoy the kind of storytelling where you are left to interpret and use analogues to your own experiences, then you'll find the stories told in fragment enjoyable. With sometimes grim moments, the game eases up on the pressure with comedic relief in the form of one of the most interesting settings sections I've ever seen, plus easter eggs and achievements to provide some relief without undermining the story the game tells. If you are also a fan of the kind of surreal or abstract gameplay found in titles like Antichamber or Stanley Parable, then you'll feel right at home here as well as the game forces you to pay attention to the details of your surrounding and engage in environmental storytelling. There are also some horror in the form of minor jumpscares, but these are toggle-able in the settings menu (Thanks devs!). Not the longest game, but also a very affordable price and with value in replayability in the form of endings directly, and challenges in achievements. Well worth the money in my opinion!

The start was pretty intriguing and I was keen to see what would happen, but there's no option to invert my Y-axis and I can't figure out what the checkbox labeled "I'm scared" means; does its being checked mean "I'm scared, please continue being scary" or does it mean "I'm scared, please stop scaring me"?
