Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival

more of an "it's complicated" kind of rating than fully positive to me. on the one hand, we have the first widely available official pc version of a taiko no tatsujin game after the xbox store exclusive "the drum master", the music pass subscription is a brilliant idea that is genuinely great value for money and the minigame modes like don-chan band are an absolute delight. if you want a way to play taiko on pc then yeah, absolutely this is the way to go. its easier to get going than using any unofficial and less than legal simulator options. however, on the other hand, the UI and UX of this version of the game is obscenely bad. before you even get to play, you're accosted with endless amounts of pop ups, story dialogue, a tutorial, a song as part of the story, more pop ups every time you enter any menu for the first time, loading screens between each menu, no quick access to menus you'd want immediate access to like the settings, you have to download each song one by one from the purchased DLC or music pass with no way to just grab all of them without using a mod, the music pass in oddly lacking in certain areas (somehow it doesnt have every 2000 series song despite those be…

to be honest the dlc model sucks balls, it's nice to get new songs every now and then but I'd recommend sims or older games to anyone who just wants to play on controller. however, there's something to be said for the fact that taiko is the only major arcade rhythm game series that has had a continued console presence. I do think ways to play these kinds of games at home should be encouraged, even if bandai namco deals great damage to the human spirit without a single benefit. now they just need to start making good rhythm game controllers so we aren't forced to turn to third parties all the time
