The game is too old and too dead to recommend, Checking steam charts there was zero players online when i started and 4 people online by the time i realized this game was not meant to be played solo. gg.9 found this helpful
This was my first MMORPG, back in 2001. While I have spent various stretches of time not playing the game over the last 24 years, it is still my favorite and the game to which I return when I get bored of the others. AO is not for stupid people who need their hands held every step of the way. It's for people who enjoy figuring out how the game works and then figuring out how to get around those mechanics. This is not a game where bosses can generally be defeated alone; most of the content is geared for groups. This is not a flaw (MMORPG) and more games could benefit from this stance. Oh, and it runs flawlessly on Linux.4 found this helpful
Anarchy Online is one of the earliest large-scale science fiction MMORPGs, developed and published by Funcom. When it launched in 2001, the online RPG landscape was dominated almost entirely by fantasy worlds filled with knights, magic, and medieval settings. Anarchy Online broke away from that formula by presenting a sprawling futuristic universe built around corporate politics, nanotechnology, and interplanetary colonization. The game takes place on Rubi-Ka, a harsh desert planet rich in a rare substance called Notum, which fuels advanced nanobot technology and serves as the economic backbone of the entire colony. This premise immediately gives the game a unique tone compared to traditional MMORPGs, mixing corporate intrigue, science fiction warfare, and social conflict within a persistent online world. The central conflict of Rubi-Ka revolves around the powerful mega-corporation Omni-Tek, which originally colonized the planet to harvest Notum. Over time, their strict control over the colony led to a rebellion by settlers who formed resistance groups known as the Clans. These factions now fight a long and bitter struggle for control of the planet, while neutral groups attempt to…2 found this helpful
Not recommended. This game's age is definitely showing, with dated graphics, archaic design choices, confusing tutorial, in-your face cash shop even before the tutorial, and just a rough overall onboarding experience. It made an impact in the MMO landscape for it's innovations and uniqueness when it came out, but it's really hard for a new player to enjoy today.1 found this helpful
I've played Anarchy Online on and off since 2003 and I'm still subscribed. The immersive lore of two worlds (Rubi-Ka and Shadowlands) combined with the mature community and the ability to build seemingly endless amount of different setups for your characters is what always brings me back.
Best MMO of all time. I've enjoyed this 25 years and counting.
