Players appreciate the wealth of Star Trek content and ongoing updates, particularly for longtime fans of the franchise who enjoy the storylines and exploration. However, new players often struggle with a poorly explained progression system that throws them into difficult content without adequate preparation or clear guidance on objectives, making the early experience frustrating despite the game's potential.
If you don't value your time or your money, this is the perfect game for you!
It is an older game. It is still getting updates and improvements to game play. It is a semi open sandbox with good exploration options.

If you're a fan of Star Trek (more specifically TNG to Enterprise) then you'll probably have a lot of fun playing the storylines in this, and there's a lot of storylines.
Disappointing New Player Experience As a lifelong Star Trek fan, I really wanted to enjoy Star Trek Online. Unfortunately, after only about 9 hours of gameplay, I found the new player experience to be extremely frustrating. The game frequently sends new players into content they are not ready for. I was directed into a Deep Space Encounter where four enemy ships attacked simultaneously. There was no indication that this content was intended for stronger ships or experienced players. Mission progression is equally confusing. At one point I received objectives for: Promotion: Centurion First Complement Task Force Operation: Romulan Imperial Minefield These objectives overlap and provide little guidance. One mission tells you to go to New Romulus Command, another asks you to speak with NPCs that are difficult or impossible to locate, while the game offers no navigation markers or clear directions. Even after reaching New Romulus, I spent a long time wandering between the Embassy, Command areas, and the planet surface because the objective marker simply wasn't there.
