About Antarctic Heritage Trust

New Zealand-based Antarctic Heritage Trust partnered with Auckland University of Technology (AUT) to create a ground-breaking virtual reality experience of Sir Edmund Hillary’s Antarctic hut. A fully immersive experience, which includes a guided tour through the hut, it celebrates what Hillary’s 23-man team achieved in their mission to further science and exploration in the world’s most extreme environment.

The Trust recently finished conservation work on the building and is pleased to be able to share this iconic part of Antarctic history and important cultural heritage site with people around the world.

This virtual reality experience celebrates New Zealand’s first presence in Antarctica as part of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition and International Geophysical Year and shares what life was like on the ice.

Explore the Antarctic Heritage Trust website (nzaht.org) for more information about Sir Ed and his team’s expeditions in Antarctica. Learn more about the pioneering science, Sir Ed’s expedition to the South Pole, Antarctic wildlife, dogs on the ice and Antarctic Heritage Trust’s work conserving this iconic piece of New Zealand history.

The Trust gratefully acknowledges Dulux NZ as the national tour sponsor as well as Antarctica New Zealand (logistics partner) and Staples VR (developer).

Antarctic Heritage Trust is not a game. Games contain meaningful gamelike interaction and game loops, which are absent in this software. Instead of being a game, Antarctic Heritage Trust is a software application that provides a VR representation of Sir Edmund Hillary's hut in Antarctica. No game... just look at stuff, but in VR. This has, however, been advertised as a game and published in the "Games" section of Steam. For those unfamiliar with what actually makes something a game, a "game loop" describes the interaction and feedback a gamer has when playing a game. Tetris, for example, has a game loop where a random block appears, the gamer interacts with the block to position it, and then the game decides if that finishes a row or not, increases the players score if any rows were completed, then gives the gamer another block to position. Counter-Strike has a game loop where a player seeks another player, tests their skill against that player by shooting them or being shot, the computer rewards the player if they win, and then if the player survives, they repeat that loop. There's no loop here, no true interactive feedback. It simply is not a game, it cannot be "played".…

Index user This is not a game, its is an odd little (and I mean little as in VERY SHORT) documentary. It functions very poorly with modern VR equipment. You can't use the controls to turn, you can only stand in a handful of predetermined spots, and only when the railroad narrative lets you move. Forget freedom to explore anything, or anywhere. Down voted because its ancient, barely functions and has what I consider to be very lazy exploration limitations on an already super tiny map.
