Desecrators

It's the best Descent-like Ive played yet. Runs like a dream, feels great to play & has amazing visual clarity. Overall just looks & plays amazingly. In all of its simplicity, everything is coherent from an artistic stand point to the gameplay itself and I don't do this often but gonna unironically quote Todd Howard's "It just works". AI is insanely solid for this kind of game too, getting invaded by other desecrators feels like having intense dog fights with actual human players. Despite the game having proc-gen levels (which was initially a little turn off for me when looking at the storepage) these are actually really great and if you told me that they were handcrafted I wouldn't bat an eye lid. Also, I don't even want to get started on how cool the tools/weapons at your disposal are. Top tier game.

I love the look and feel of this game, although I'd have preferred a bespoke campaign over the rogue-like style campaign.

Okay so I do recommend Desecrators but that comes with come caveats. You have to really like Descent style games and be able to deal with extreme difficulty if you want to find enjoyment here. The pros: - weapon variety is good - sound design is great - controls are spot on and it feels great even on Steam Deck - runs perfectly fine and no bugs that I’ve seen The bad: - every level feels the same. Technically one might be a mining facility and the other a derelict capital ship but they’re all just a nonsense maze of gray and brown hallways. Yes I know this is a roguelike with procgen levels but you can still attempt to make them feel like places and things. Every level here is just an abstract mess of hallways - no set up and only two mission types. You’re either finding two gold pieces or flipping two or three switches, all of which is the same in the end. Mission variety is nonexistent - the hub is so empty that it’s weird. Between missions you go to a dark gray room where there are only two things. A map and an upgrade station on the wall. Why is this even a place to fly around and not just a menu? It feels like maybe there was going to be story in this game that needed a hub …
