Would you make a good predator? This free ‘citizen science’ game developed and released by researchers at the University of Lincoln allows you to test your skills as a predator and help contribute to our understanding of the natural world. In this game, you are a hungry animal and your aim is to capture as many flies as you can with your retractable tongue. Specifically, you will be using the VR headset to track targets with your head movements, and using a VR controller to extend your tongue to capture flies. Waves of flies of different group sizes will be presented to you and you need to do your best to catch them all and get the highest score you can. There is also a profile system to allow multiple different players to contribute to our data collection. Your performance (in terms of your ability to catch the flies) will be sent to us to be analysed. We will use this anonymous data to answer questions about how the movements of prey animals, such as flies, can affect their chances of escaping predation. More specifically, we are looking at a behaviour common to many animals known as ‘protean movement’ (erratic, evasive movement patterns that reduce the chances of capture). Many animals move in this way, but we want to know more about protean movement in groups of animals, and what makes it harder for a predator (in this case, you) to catch them.

FlyCatcher is a free VR game, that is also a scientific study. It worked on my HTC Vive system, looked ok, played ok, sounded ok. You have a choice of 6 animals that have shooting tongues. I didn't know that salamanders have a shooting tongue, made me look on the Internet and read about salamanders. In this game, each animal has the same long fast tongue. But i think in reality, they have different lengths and widths with difference in speed of deployment and retraction. I think the dev mentioned they are more studying the flying insects behaviors in eluding capture. Well, this does make for an fun little shooter game. You have to agree that your data generated from playing this game is ok to be used in a research study. Has a profile manager that lets you change your animal, delete your profile, create new profile. CONS: Does Not work on Index controllers. Try it, for a little fun and help a scientist out.3 found this helpful

It's from University of Lincoln. While student projects tend to be better quality than most "amateur" made games, we must still question what value such projects have for gamers. As with all student projects, this isn't really a fully fleshed out game, it's just the result of an academic exercise, and as such it has much more limited value as a game than a professionally developed game would have. Educational institutions should not be using Steam as a dumping ground for homework assignments (especially if the students didn't even pass the course). Что особенно понравилось – это минималистичный визуальный стиль и спокойная фоновая музыка. Они создают расслабляющую атмосферу, несмотря на динамичный геймплей. Из минусов – со временем может стать немного однообразной, так как механика не предлагает особого разнообразия. Однако, учитывая простоту и доступность игры, это вполне простительно. В целом, FlyCatcher – это приятное времяпрепровождение, которое подойдет любителям казуальных аркад. Рекомендую попробовать!
