空之歌：每当磁针再次振动，我便在此等待 is a very unusual visual novel, and I liked how it starts with what seems like such a simple rural school story. I follow Lin Cheng as he heads into the mountains to meet his childhood friend Xia You and return to school, but there is clearly something strange underneath the ordinary setting. I enjoyed that feeling of knowing that the simple story being presented to me is probably not the complete truth. The game focuses heavily on atmosphere and storytelling rather than traditional gameplay. I move through the countryside in a first person perspective, spending time around forests, dirt roads, farmland and a small rural school. There are also little everyday activities and interactions that make the setting feel lived in. I liked the slower pace because it gives the environment time to breathe and makes the quieter moments feel important. The relationship between the characters is another part I enjoyed. Xia You is clearly central to the story, and the writing keeps returning to memories, friendship and the feeling that something has been forgotten.
