Il Divino: Michelangelo’s Sistine Ceiling in VR is a Virtual Reality experience powered by Unreal Engine where you can walk through and learn about the Sistine Chapel Ceiling.
This experience was created exclusively for the SIGGRAPH 2019 Immersive Pavilion, by the team behind the previous SIGGRAPH 2017 VR piece: Il Gigante: Michelangelo’s David in VR. Debuting at SIGGRAPH on Valve’s INDEX headset, Il Divino delivers an experience of the highest fidelity –you can see individual cracks and brush strokes in the plaster!
Step onto Michelangelo’s own scaffold and learn about how he painted the ceiling, or enter a Vatican conservator’s mobile aerial platform to see the ceiling up close, and learn about the controversial cleaning. In all, there are over 100 clickable elements about Michelangelo’s monumental work.
There is also an non-vr mode available for keyboard and mouse play.

this is better than fighting crowds in real life. i would really have liked a tour in italian with subtitle options in other languages. thank you for this experience!
A hesitant thumbs up, because it would not launch in VR mode on Quest 3. However, in standard mode on the PC it seemed like a cool experience... walk around and take in the Sistine Chapel as if you were actually there.
dear steam... stop letting people put things on steam that dont work. this just doesnt work.

This is a fantastic experience! It is absolutely worth checking out even if you've seen the Sistine Chapel in person. The accuracy with which this program recreates the real location is amazing. I am in awe of what the developers have accomplished here. The detailed voice-over provided in this experience is great and incredibly informative. I love that I can stand on a virtual crane to get a closer look at the ceiling. Being able to stand on scaffolding like that which was originally used in the painting's creation is fabulous. I saw much more in this VR program than I could in person and could better appreciate Michelangelo's astounding artwork in this format. The virtual tour took me about an hour and a half to complete, and I'm glad I spent the time to examine every feature of the ceiling. I can't wait to see what new VR experiences these developers create next, because this is genuinely one of the greatest uses of the technology. I'm so glad this has been released for free so that anyone with a headset can experience this. This is an essential program for anyone with access to VR.
