Kokurase Episode 1 is a free story driven adventure game where we play as a group of students who call themselves the Kokurase gang, or Cupid's Helpers. Their job is to help a shy first year student called Sakura get together with Yoshimitsu, a popular older student she has a crush on. We switch between the different members of the group and help set up their plan around the school. The biggest strength is the group itself. Genji, Riho, Meg and Kanta all have different personalities, so switching between them keeps the story from feeling too one note. We are not just following one character around either, because each member has their own part to play in getting Sakura and Yoshimitsu together. The gameplay is also more interesting than a normal visual novel. We can explore the school, talk to characters and use key phrases during conversations to unlock the next parts of the story. Some sections work more like little speech puzzles, where we have to work out which character should say or do something to make the plan work. The humour is another thing that works well. The whole idea of a secret school group secretly trying to set two people up leads to a lot of silly situations. …
