About Messy Hearts
In this retro-inspired, pixel art, cozy visual novel, a workplace friendship begins to unravel.
Welcome to VOLUME 1 of Messy Hearts
Follow two coworkers as their connection deepens, blurs, and ultimately breaks. Set during a painful chapter of life, Messy Hearts explores mental health, trauma, blurry boundaries, and the complicated ways people can hurt each other.A Messy Life in a VN
You play as Florence, a game dev, parent, and lonely person trying to stay afloat in a life that is full to the brim with stress and vulnerability. When a married coworker suddenly offers unexpected friendship, Florence finds comfort in their growing connection. Their friendship slowly twists into something painful and disorienting, and a slow-motion collision unfolds that they both pretend not to see coming. This is an all-too-common story, told through fictional characters, and inspired by painful relationships. How to Play
Messy Hearts is a single-player narrative with a select few choices along the way. Do we exercise control while life is being a whirlwind, or do we lean into the chaos and suffer the emotional consequences? Either way, this timeline is a doozy. Told in a comic book-style format with pixel art, the game invites players to click through Florence’s memories and conversations like pages of a journal or a back-and-forth thread.Collect characters and journal entries, and stop and see the sights in this slice-of-life story inspired by real events.Florence's world awaits. Grab a blanket and a hot beverage of choice for this cozy, nostalgic retro game. Dive into a chaotic little life and learn a cautionary tale along the way: trust must be earned.DLC & expansions
What Steam players say

This is a short visual novel with a couple of choices to make throughout the story that, while not redirecting the story, allows the player to decide how the main character Florence reacts to events. After finishing each chapter, the game gives you the option to rewind/replay to make different choices when available. It should also be noted that this encapsulates only Part 1 of the game (which contains 9 chapters) and that Part 2 is in the works. So the complete story is sadly not told here. But for a free pixel art visual novel that's full of heart, this is a really good one.4 found this helpful
Immediately on launch I could see the careful attention to detail and design and that the medium is being used in a powerful way. The story is well built - little, simple familiar stuff that builds into a relatable emotional knot. Quirkily genuine. I enjoyed the voice and the realness.4 found this helpful

you really just fall into the story with messy hearts. you start to genuinely care about the MC and her son, and you find yourself thinking about every choice you make and feeling as if you were in her shoes. even the smallest decisions can leave you feeling guilty afterward, which I think really shows how well the characters and story pull you in. i did buy the DLC and chapter 2 was great! It added even more to the story and kept me just as invested. I’m already highly anticipating chapter 3!!! kudos to the devs for making something that feels so heartfelt and real. You can really tell a lot of care went into this game. !! <31 found this helpful
