Realm Runner

This game has changed my life. This truly magnificent experience has opened up my eyes to the possibility of portal running. It is truly spectacular to see such a wonderful team create such a wonderful game. Realm runner will be the next fortnite, mark my words.

Need a "middling" review option for this one. There is some fun to be had here, good sense of speed (like actually). At the end of the day though this really does feel like an unfinished Sonic fangame lol (bro even does the SA1 pose going through air rings). The audio balancing is terrible, good amount of bugs, controls are middle of the road... yeah. It's free though so who am I to complain.

"Realm Runner" is I think a student project... it's got all the same qualities. Okayish graphics, simple, uninspired 3D platforming/Sonic ripoff gameplay, a token story, and no deep, full game, just what feels like a tech demo. Not the worst tech demo, but a buggy and abandoned one... making this less fun to play than it should be. All the hallmarks of a student project are there. What do you do in the game? It's basically a 3D Sonic game... well, a subset of one. So you'll do 3D speed platforming. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. Now on to pricing and value for gamers. This is "free" enough (not every "free" game in the "free" section is truly free, there's usually some hidden price tag), at least you won't be expected to spend any more money after you download this, but just because something is free doesn't mean it's good, and the cost of a game is more than just financial, you…

Needed more time to bake. Controller support is half-implemented (not listed on the store page), doesn't work for advancing the dialogue after the tutorial. Physics feel weird, not really sure how to explain it. Homing attack doesn't work very well, and doesn't have any targeting reticle to know what you're targeting. Failing the homing attack tutorial drops you to the lower area with a spring, which just barely has enough height to reach the upper ledge. Following that is the rail grinding tutorial, which requires you to manually move your camera to where you're going, and the rail switching has a chance of not working, dropping you into the void. Wallrunning is weird in a way I can't describe, but it also has a chance to reset your animation, causing you to run along the wall in the falling animation.

The game is incredibly buggy, alot of interactions feel unintended and the motion blur is incredible. Ignoring that? Genuinely great game. Incredible art direction, charm for days, and a soundtrack that is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ banging. Short and sweet.
