About ScrapBots

ScrapBots is a first-person melee brawler developed by a team of nine undergraduate game development students at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Designed as our capstone project, our goal was to show off our strengths while learning and growing as game designers in the process.ScrapBots is set on an abandoned junk planet inhabited by ruthless robots tearing each other apart. The player takes control of a robot named Junk Dog, a hermit on a quest to defeat the leader of the most powerful faction in the wasteland. Use junk dogs’ unique function of interchangeable arms and other combat capabilities to help survive the savage bots of the wasteland.Fast First-Person Combat: Use both fists to box other bots into scrap. Take their left-over arms to fuel Junk dog’s rampage across the wasteland.Interchangeable Arms: Equip a variety of arms from Junk dog’s defeated enemies, each with unique punches and stats. Mix arms to find the best play style for the situation.Environmental Traps: Scattered across the wasteland are dangerous traps junk dog can leverage to speed up his killing.Movement abilities: Dash around the enemy to stay in the fight longer and help get across the wasteland terrain. Will you scrap your enemies or become scrap yourself?

ScrapBots in a nutshell: Pick up arm, smack robots, arm breaks, grab another arm, repeat. This game has a bit of charm going for it. Playing as an underdog bot fighting for freedom gives the game some personality, and the low-poly presentation is pleasant enough. Unfortunately, the gameplay loop became repetitive fairly quickly for me. The main gimmick revolves around using robotic arms as weapons, but they have limited durability. Once an arm breaks, you need to throw it away and pick up another from defeated enemies. While interesting at first, it eventually felt more tedious than engaging. By the later stages, I found myself running past enemies whenever possible just to reach the end. Or cheesing the environmental kills whenever possible. The combat and progression simply weren't compelling enough to keep me invested. Not terrible, not amazing. Just a fairly average little action game. Since it's free, it's worth a look if you're curious, but don't expect anything groundbreaking.

A few bugs, some obvious lack of polish, but for a student game?? This is actually really damn impressive. Like, I cannot stress enough that for what this game is, especially as a free product, it's just a very creative and impressive little game. I would love to see something like this expanded with more customization and versatility into a full, funded game. There's a lot fun you can do with just the basic concept of swappable arms and parts in a "brawler" style first person game. And despite being a very simple concept there's a lot of jumping off points and ways this could be expanded upon. Even as it is I could see this being something that should frankly cost at least a few dollars. Very well done, devs!

ScrapBots is a rough gem. The vision for the product is unique and quite ambitious and can leave certain consumer feeling "what did i just go through" - thats because this is fundamentally a project and not a product to consume. There is a difference. There is a lot of room to improve and expand on if they are serious to turn this into a product. Imagine Real Steel + RPG. That just sums up how much potential this product has.

Solid premise, just wound up dropping it myself because I could feel it was going to be short and I was looking for something to sink more time into when I take the time to play.

This would make a for a really good speed-running game. The movement has some fun quirks that can be abused to get super fast >:) I really enjoyed the movement and the art style of the game.
