Separated by Nightmares: Where Duty Dies

The narrative was actually pretty decent and its quiet light so far its not really impressive less scare in any way e-e. But still a nice go when in the testing mood i recommend give it a try. ^^

‘Separated by Nightmares: Where Duty dies’ has an intriguing concept. You play as a police officer with memory loss, who has to solve one last case to find out what let to his downfall. You are alone at night in a police precinct, which is definitely an interesting setup. Unfortunately it only goes downhill from here. The presentation and gameplay are really underwhelming. There are a couple of sequences, where the protagonist is telling the story through monologues, but those are just written in front of a blank black background. Not every game needs to have fancy cutscenes, but even an Indie developer could have at least included a couple of picture slides in the background, while the story unfolds. The lightswitches in the precinct also don’t seem to work, so that you just have to stumble around in the dark with a flashlight. In other games this might have been intriguing or atmospheric, but here it was just cumbersome. It only made finding items more difficult without actually enhancing the atmosphere. Separated by Nightmares: Where Duty Dies is a short psychological horror game that I liked mainly because of its focus on guilt, grief and the things I try to bury instead of confront. I play as a workaholic lieutenant who finds himself trapped inside a dark police station after a sudden blackout. The basic setup immediately gave me an uneasy feeling because I am not just investigating a mystery. I am also slowly uncovering something deeply personal. The gameplay is built around first person exploration and puzzle solving. I move through the station, search for clues and investigate notes that gradually reveal more about the protagonist's past. I liked having to pay attention to the environment because the story is not simply delivered through a long sequence of cutscenes. The station itself becomes part of the investigation, and moving through the darkness makes even simple discoveries feel more important. The mystery is probably the strongest part for me. The lieutenant is obsessed with solving cases, but it becomes clear that his dedication to his work has come at a serious personal cost. Decent atmosphere, spooks, and premise. I think maybe design and puzzles are a bit shallow since it's literally "get a key to open a door to get a key" kinda thing, but for a free teaser it's not bad.

This game is fun. It's very short, but it does a great job of spine tingling horror
