Sumeru is a Physics puzzle game with some platform elements wherein you use elements to draw lines, objects, and items to solve the puzzles. It plays a lot like Nihilumbra meets Journey, actually. I found it a relatively relaxing little game with somewhat challenging puzzles based on physics, for example one puzzle may have you trying to hold a door open and another might have you launching the character, Yun, directly. The gameplay tends to change its objectives up every so often, and even the game style changes to give your mind a break from the platform puzzles. The hint/solution system is unique too, in that you have to solve a much easier sliding puzzle in order to get the blueprint - or, you can forgo that and do it your own way to see if you can solve it yourself. It's always available if you're stuck, however, which I find nice as some of the puzzles can get quite fiendish. The artwork is really, really pretty - it reminds me of the best scenes of games like Hollow Knight or Okami. And like those games, the music's quite nice, too. This is not usually my go-to genre, but Sumeru was thoroughly enjoyable and easy to get the hang of. The difficulty scales well as you advance through the game, though some solutions were pretty impossible to come to on my own and I needed the hints. Speaking of, most negative reviews seem to be for the 'hint' system. They are right in saying that it's not a hint system because it gives you the solution-- it does. However, in order to get the solution you need to solve a smaller mini-puzzle, and you still need to be able to draw the solution accurately and MAKE it work. Most of the time the hints confirmed that I was already doing the right thing and I just needed to keep adjusting-- so it's not as brainless as others make it sound by far. You're also never prompted to look at the hints so you can avoid them if it's that big of a dealbreaker for you. I AM disappointed that the game had nothing to do with Mesopotamia, Sumerians, or anything of the sort though. The visuals are beautiful, don't get me wrong...but I LOVE ancient middle eastern history and culture so much and really wish the level designs reflected "The Sumerian World" the player is taken to. But that's me being nitpic…

This game is a hidden gem! Sumeru has a unique charm with its beautiful hand-drawn art and tranquil atmosphere. The gameplay is simple yet satisfying, with puzzles that are enjoyable without being too challenging. Each level feels like a journey, and I love the calm vibe throughout. A perfect game for when you want to relax and explore something artistic and peaceful.
