The Journey Back is a small, introspective first-person adventure that places atmosphere and personal reflection above spectacle or mechanical complexity. Developed by Erwin Wolf and published by MarWin Studios, the game presents itself as a quiet exploration of loss, memory, and uncertainty, unfolding within a minimalist, low-poly world that feels both abstract and emotionally charged. Rather than guiding the player through a heavily scripted narrative or dense puzzle framework, it invites slow movement, careful observation, and a willingness to engage with ambiguity. The experience begins abruptly with a car accident that leaves the protagonist alone in an unfamiliar landscape, searching for a missing sister. This simple premise serves as the emotional anchor for the entire journey. The game wastes little time explaining itself, instead dropping the player into an open environment where progress is driven by curiosity rather than explicit objectives. This design choice reinforces the feeling of disorientation and quiet unease, encouraging players to piece together meaning through exploration rather than exposition. Visually, The Journey Back adopts a deliberately stripped-down …2 found this helpful
Meh walking sim (I facetiously qualify this as a walking sim as the puzzles are too easy). The story doesn't pull me in and the physics can sometimes be uncanny. If you have time to spare and don't necessary want to play a quality game to pass the time, you might like this. Not me though.1 found this helpful
I can't tell you very much about the game at this point, because I have not gotten very far through it. I have progressed far enough to see that the backstory is about a car crash and/or a mental health crisis, and this, frankly, is not the sort of thing for which I play a game. But I also had problems getting just from A to B, before being able to grasp the big picture. There were too many problems, in my opinion, advancing the player through the fictional world--trying to find the next goal, the next place to go--to justify spending a lot of time at it. There were long walks through rooms and corridors where the player tries in vain to find anything of importance, possibly mirroring the delirious mind of the crash victim, but not exactly endearing to someone just trying to play the game. If there is something more profound than this that the developers are trying to convey, I am not aware of it. And the game is not exactly beautiful, the graphics not entirely charming, the quiet music extremely repetitive.
An interesting little game, that I feel is more of an exploration game than a puzzle game. The art was unique and interesting, and it was a pretty neat world to move around in. None of the puzzles were particularly challenging, I would have liked to see more from them as a matter of fact - there were some neat ideas I would've like to see explored more. But for a couple bucks it's a cool experience. I think the game could have benefited from some tightening up of the controls, and a sensitivity slider.
The Journey Back Positives: + Nice little story + Good puzzles + Some parts are nicely designed + Quite fun to play + Ok variation + Relaxing + The animals + Nice music + Good walking speed Negatives: - Very short - Low FOV - Some head-bob - The way you use your inventory should have been solved easier and better - The graphics are a mixed bag - Size ratio is a bit of sometimes - Bugs Total Score: 7/10
Sorry, this game is just not good. The puzzles are way too easy, mostly "fetch item and insert someplace" or "use obvious clue on panel around the next corner". Not very entertaining.
