About Velvet 89
What do people making a stand against the unjust regime dream of? What do they fear? To find out, you’ll need a sharp eye. The color of clothes, hairstyle or the surroundings will be your clues in our historical hidden-object game.
Velvet 89 takes you on a trip across the revolting country – from cautious ecology-themed protests to huge crowds. Investigate the moments before police brutally attacked a peaceful demonstration and unveil the stories of those who decided to speak up.
Velvet 89 was developed with experts from the renowned Czech project Stories of Injustice. Every piece of the story in the game is based on actual testimonies. It shows how the revolution gained momentum, from the border regions onto the squares of Prague and further.
History comes alive in a visual style reminiscent of paper cut-outs, used videotapes or faded photo albums. The game combines handcrafted atmosphere with real historical footage.
- takes place in five cities and at six protests that made the Velvet Revolution happen
- features a hidden-object gameplay with more than 40 stories
- uses stylized visuals that combine handcrafted graphics and actual historical footage
- was made with experts and is based on real testimonies

What a fantastic master class in including history into a game! Both visually and creatively! As many others have said this is an I-Spy and Where's Waldo/Wally type of game where you explore through the crowd to find various folks with various perspectives and lived experiences related to the Velvet Revolution; that led to the fall of Czechoslovakia. I myself had not known the proper history of this revolution so this was deeply moving and educational for me! I think the nuance here is that looking for each person and item in the crowd highlights the ways in which each person matters in these types of situations when folks are fighting against injustice in their country. We learn what each individuals thoughts are and each item gives us context clues of where we are. As outsiders we often will see the big crowds on international news but not understand or hear what brought people to join these movement and moments in history. This game really highlights the power of the collective and how we can all find common purpose and empathy in a shared cause. And how people really can create mass change! Each individual matters! Thank you for such a wonderful educational experience!1 found this helpful
Featuring the author's poorly disguised political propaganda
Nice & relaxing, very human and tense perspectives on the uprising. Bravo! Finding each charater gave me the time to think, sustained by the moody crowd noises. A great, introspective process.
A very unique combination of game mechanics and story.
