Victory and Glory: Napoleon

This could have been such a fun game. However, it's poorly designed. The board game was focused on neat miniatures and nice maps, but they obviously never play tested it. A few rules here or there would have made the difference. Extra leaders in an army do nothing other than possibly getting killed. Huh? Perhaps extra leaders provide a bonus or can be used in battles or are required based on size of army. Russians, Brits can land in France from turn 1, while France starts at war with Austria and Prussia can join war in a few turns. Game over. Preventing landing due to say, transport shortages, until some date would have helped. Again, not play tested and poorly designed. As far as the computer game goes, Matrix went cheap, very cheap. Can only play France. Another huh? And in typical Matrix style, they still want top dollar for this. Avoid this game.

I like the tone, style and structure of the game. The gameplay on the map is enjoyable and cleverly designed. However, the combat is horrific. Not the structure, that's also pretty well designed, but whatever math is going on with the rolls make for some of the most comically stupid moments I've experienced in a videogame. Don't concern yourself too much with developing your armies into elite forces, no matter what you do you'll watch helplessly as your 4's get picked off by 2's. I'm not going to go into detail, I wasted enough time on this game already - the rolls are comically stupid. If you want to win you essentially just need to have the bigger army, your superior forces are pointless. Your strategy is pointless. This isn't just venting from one bad game or being a sore loser - you'll still win, just in the most annoying way possible. I've played over 100 hours and this has been my experience throughout. Done.

A fun lightweight strategy game that still captures some of the flavor of the Napoleonic Wars. Only the French are playable, but there are a number of different starting positions. Try the 1813 start on Emperor difficulty for a real challenge.

This might be my first negative review, and I mean no disrespect to the devs. This is a good game for some ppl, and I am happy they like it, but this review is for other ppl. If you are a fairly hardcore Grognard then this is not the game for you. Everything about it is very basic. The AGOED game which is deeply flawed is miles better and deeper. This game is good for ppl new to wargaming or for ppl that just like the feel of the period and want to march across europe without much issue.

I really enjoyed playing this game. It is pretty hard as you are outnumbered and the victory conditions are high. I managed to play cat and mouse with the nearly invincible British fleet and lured them far enough away from England that I could cross the channel and take London. Don't know if I could do it again as it was pretty difficult. This game is still fun nearly a decade after release, so pick it up if you are thinking about it.
