since balatro came out, there have been a number of games that are inspired by it, and real balatro sickos are always on the lookout for something with the same amount of depth and careful balance that that game has. well, this isn't that... but it is the most visually and thematically interesting take on the genre since then anyway. the game's very easy if you're experienced with the genre, and the balance is kind of nonsensical... but the atmosphere and character design is well worth the price of admission anyway! even if this is unlikely to become my next sink for hundreds of hours, i'm glad i picked it up. really refreshing to see someone take on this gameplay style without just copying balatro's presentation note-for-note, and the price of this one is a steal. the gameplay itself isn't *bad* per se either, and will keep you entertained even if you end up wishing it had a bit more depth.

Yahtzee, but the scoring hands change every time based on which cards you draw. You can purchase new dice and cards that have different rules (only has odd numbers, can score with the Fibonacci sequence, etc) to increase the likelihood of scoring big combos. Each re-roll can add bonuses or detriments to scoring cards, and items are available to provide certain buffs, so there are several avenues to take in building your portfolio. I found this game more engaging than Pip My Dice. Works well on the Steam Deck also.

Why doesn't this game have more reviews / players!? I didn't play a huge amount of hours (yet), but it's pretty solid! And for that price, it's a steal!

This was such a fun surprise. The art style is easily my favourite part. Every "enemy" has so much personality, and the atmosphere pulled me in right away. I kept telling myself "one more area" and somehow an hour disappeared. The gameplay is just really satisfying, and everything works together so well. It took me a minute at first to fully understand the gamestyle/UI but once I got it, it was very satisfying to see BIG NUMBER GO BRR :D If you're into weird, stylish indie games with great vibes, definitely give this one a shot. You can tell the devs put a ton of love into it, and I had a great time from start to where i am now (yet to finish the game). I'd love to see more games like this.

Recommended BONEREADER surprised me with how deep its card and dice systems are. You are not just building a card deck — you are also building your dice pool, and the two need to work together. If your cards and dice don’t support each other, your whole run can become much harder. The game is definitely not simple, and I think the tutorial could explain some things better. Even after 90 minutes, I was still unsure about exactly how some rounds and scoring rules work. But once the systems start clicking, it becomes really interesting. The artwork is beautiful, the dark occult atmosphere is fantastic, and there seem to be a huge number of different builds to experiment with. I already know I made plenty of mistakes in my first run, and that just makes me want to start again and see how much better I can do. If you enjoy card games, dice building, synergies, number optimization, and deeper strategy, BONEREADER is absolutely worth a look. For the price, I think the value is very good, and I’m definitely going to keep playing.
