Ignite (2011)

[h1] Edgy racer that tries to be another NFS. Game have more arcade feeling. You get points for drifting and wreaking havoc but unlike Flatout vehicles don't get obliterated, there's no car destruction whatsoever. Smashing into track boundaries will decrease points. So basically score high and get high. Controls are ok, not terrible but there's no controller support. Tracks are somewhat mediocre. Visuals up to 1080p. Music is ok. Overall very mediocre racing game. PS: Run in compatibility mode with Win XP [/h1]

Picked this up on sale and had a decent couple of hours with it before the cracks started showing. The core idea is genuinely fun, building score by drifting and plowing through barricades then deciding whether to burn it as nitro or bank it for a time bonus at the finish line, it makes races feel scrappy and alive for a while. But the rubber-band AI completely kills the tension once you figure out that racking up a big score causes the CPU cars to get superhuman top speeds, so the game basically punishes you for playing well. The seven tracks start blending together fast, everything is grey concrete and industrial scenery with no real variety, and the campaign is over in about three to four hours. Multiplayer has been dead for years so once you finish the campaign there is not much reason to come back. Fun for a short afternoon if you grab it at a steep discount, but there are better budget racers out there.

Haven't played this in a while, but still have fond memories of it. If you're on a lower end system and looking for a fairly easy game to just pick up and drive a race car on various tracks, this will work nicely for that.
