The Letter - Horror Visual Novel

Not that bad, not really good either. Mediocre fits. The voice acting was great. The characters, however, felt stereotypical and some interactions between characters felt forced. While I also enjoyed the music, [b]the art was lacking[/b]. The artwork did not fit the story and really took me out of it at some points. I could not tell you how the story ended, since I decided not to continue playing it to the end, not even for one ending. One character's chater was just so incredibly [i]slow[/i], [i]boring[/i], and strangely [i]over the top[/i] that I couldn't bear it anymore. [b]I would not recommend it.[/b] Not even when on sale. PS: What's up with all the unnecessary achievements? They are redundant and annoying at best!

I originally played The Letter on Switch, but after replaying it on Steam, I can confidently say that PC is the much better experience. The game looks absolutely gorgeous, especially the huge variety of backgrounds (many of which are even animated) and the overall production quality is genuinely impressive. The voice acting is also fantastic. I normally don’t particularly like English-voiced visual novels, but the cast here really won me over :) My favourite part, though, has to be the achievements. There are so many branches and different outcomes that you genuinely have to work for 100%. I’ve already filled over ten pages of notes trying to keep track of which routes and choices I need to replay to unlock everything. I’ve 100%ed everything up to Chapter 6 so far, whilst Ashton is around 75%, and the final two chapters are proving to be an absolute nightmare. I love that the game actually rewards you for properly exploring its branching story rather than just playing through it once. The horror is also handled pretty well. Artificially lengthened with countless single lines of text that could not be skipped by holding down a key. There's not even a viable autoplay option. The game insists you click for every. Line. Of. Text. If you're the kind of person that would rather read an article than watch a 10 minute YouTube video, like me, this pace will greatly frustrate you. I ended up speed clicking through everything and making random choices just to reach the end. Reading back through the backlog of text, the story is something that might be deep for the very young, but it's pretty shallow for anyone who's read an actual book.

You know what I don’t recommend? Trying to get 100% achievements in this game. You know what I do recommend? Actually playing it. The Letter is a phenomenal visual novel. I absolutely love the quick-time events (QTEs), the deep mystery, and the way your choices genuinely feel like they matter. With each character you play, you unearth new pieces of the puzzle until the full, twisted picture finally comes together. You'll love some characters, you'll absolutely despise others, and depending on the paths you take, you will either cry a lot or scream out loud. (Full disclosure: I’m a total scaredey-cat and this game definitely made me jump more than once on this trip). It is an excellent experience, but a word of warning to the completionists out there: achievement hunting in this game is an exercise in pure tedium. To get that 100%, you have to hunt down every single individual branching path. By the time you reach Chapters 6 and 7, those paths feel almost infinite, with literally hundreds of possibilities. This is a really good visual novel. The characters are fully voiced and the voice acting is good. The story is suspenseful, though a bit slow at times. It's got jumpscares.
