About Along the Edge

A profound and immersive story

Daphné is at a dead end. When she inherits her remote family estate in the French countryside, she also inherits a generational feud between her family, the Delatours, and the mighty Malterres. At the same time, Frank, the father of the child they lost, is back to patch things up, but Daphné must also juggle the insistent courtship of a new suitor, her work as a teacher in the local middle school, rumours of witchery attached to her name, and this mysterious condemned tower, in the center of her castle.

Will you choose to believe in magick, or will you hang on to your rational view of the world?

An adventure shaped by your choices

  • Become a witch, a priestess, a math teacher, or the director of the local school.
  • Avenge your family, or bury the hatchet.
  • Choose Frank, Stanislas, or stay single.

A personalized and unique experience

  • Over 450 full-screen illustrations.
  • An original soundtrack featuring piano music.
  • Dozens of achievements to unlock.
  • 20 characters with over 400 variants and attitudes.
  • Nearly 80,000 words, about the size of a 400-page novel.
  • Make Daphné evolve with more than 38 alternative versions of the main character.

Along the Edge delivers a captivating art style and a genuinely engaging story where your choices actually feel like they matter. However, the pacing stumbles in the middle acts, and some character arcs don't quite land the emotional payoff they aim for. It’s a solid visual novel if you catch it on sale, even if it doesn't entirely break new ground.

A really engaging story with some surprising depth and tough choices. Highly recommend giving it a go.

Along the Edge is a genuinely special visual novel that makes your choices actually matter by subtly shifting the main character's personality and appearance rather than forcing a cheesy good-versus-evil path, all wrapped in a gorgeous watercolor art style and a cozy, slightly eerie European countryside vibe.

This was my first time playing a visual novel, and I enjoyed it more than I expected. The story is well written and draws you in like a good TV show, with enough creepy moments to keep things interesting, especially if you enjoy light horror elements. The visuals and soundtrack complement the atmosphere really well, and the characters are nicely integrated into the story. Considering it's a low-budget game, I really can't think of any major negatives. Overall, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. Overall: 6.5/10.

Pros and cons to this game. It is the second Nova-box game I read through, and both left me with similar feelings of, this could have been great. But it feels unsatisfying in the end. The art is a plus. The music faded into the background, which is fine as well. Gameplay-wise, I find the compass of choices very interesting, but it stops short of being actually engaging - different choices light up different parts of the "compass", indicating where your priorities lie and how you are influencing Daphné, but I find it so unsatisfying the game will not tell you where you are at with the compass, and there only seems one part of the game where the compass has an influence. And staying grounded in my dialogue choices meant I got the "boring" branch, where witchcraft did not seem to factor into the story at all. The romance in both Nova-box games I played felt superficial and unsatisfying. Along the Edge may be forgiven for that, as it is short, but even the longer Nova-box VN I read through didn't convince me any more - I made a conscious decision in this one to stay single and not even try entertain these men. The love interests are uninteresting. There's either [spoiler]your ex, wi…
