About Arthurian Legends

✦ AI summary

Hack and slash your way through Saxon invaders and dark magic threats across medieval Albion, wielding over 10 weapons and devastating magic runes to freeze, incinerate, and obliterate your enemies in gloriously gory combat. Explore three story chapters packed with hidden secrets, ancient relics, and alternate game modes as you fight to save a cursed kingdom from darkness.

In a time before Camelot, magic coursed through the veins of Albion and for generations the people learned to harness this power, and as with all things in nature they understood there was a balance. For a time the people were united in peace, 'til the day the once-righteous king of Albion, Uther Pendragon, cast blame upon magic itself for the death of his queen, and thus decreed magic to be of "The Old Religion", banishing it's practice and followers from Albion forever...

A darkness now spreads across Albion, the crops are dying and the water is turning foul. The people are plagued with hunger and disease, fewer by the day have the strength to fend off the growing hordes of Saxons invading from the east. It is feared the Saxons are aided by dark magic, by those who were exiled by Uther's blood-lust, Masters of the Old Religion.
Alone, against an army of Saxons, demonic beasts, possessed knights, exiled mages, the undead and worse. Thy journey will take thee 'cross foul and treacherous terrain, from dark forests, forts and swamps, to the frigid wilderness and frozen caverns, to castles, crypts and caves. Along the way lay many hidden secrets full of items, magical runes and powerful ancient relics to aid thee in thy journey.
Slice the hell out of Saxons / demonic beasts / whatever. Smash them with thy shield, cut off their heads, make them explode in a magnificent shower of blood and guts, or simply give 'em a good old-fashioned fist and/or spiked club to the face. Conjure balls of fire and engulf thy foes in flames, freeze them and shatter their frozen corpses, cast thunderous storms of lightning to strike down any who stand beneath their tormenting clouds, and many more ways to bring thine enemies to ruin.

This game asks and answers a very important question: What if Witchaven was actually good?

Noticed how modern 'retro-inspired' indie games, particularly 'boomer-shooters' are dime a dozen and worse than their inspiration for the most part? This is the exact opposite if you got burned out by Witchaven's antics.

It's like if Witchaven wasn't a massive turd. I find myself thinking about this game often and will likely replay it in future. I wish the creator made DLC or a sequel. Might be the most notable example of a hidden gemerald I can think of.

Lo, upon the horizon! Tall standeth a great title! With feel of old and looks to match. What could bring the downfall of such a title? Performance mostly, as well as a weird feel that only a botched engine could bring. Arthurian Legends should be, if there were justice, very high on the pantheon of old school shooters. It combines both novel features, mostly through being melee based with purposefully clumsy ranged combat, as well a very authentic feeling old school look and character. It has excellent pacing all the way through with a very good sense of design permeating all the way through it. Sadly, the choice of software that it was made in makes it a very hard sell, as not only is the performance absolutely woeful, the game has strange collision with items in the world. This makes Arthurian Legends a title that is mostly recommended only for the most obsessive FPS fans who are somewhat forgiving for poor performance. I normally reserve criticisms for the end of the review, but this absolutely must be confronted: This game is absolute hot garbage on a technical front. I know I sort of highlighted that above, but the engine pushing this, the 001 Game Creator engine, is really…

Well, after playing through the game I just can say that it's pretty damn good. It has that old school feel, and you can tell it's a game that wears it's inspirations up its sleeve. As many other players have said, it's Witchaven but actuallt good, really good in fact. But, it's nontheless a game developed by one guy, and that shows: you get stuck on geometry very often, some enemies are not really that balanced, some maps are really confusing to navigate, there is no map (as far as I know), no checkpoints either (you can lose a ton of progress). Still, an incredible effort was put into it and it shows. The sprites, the music, the handcrafted maps, the weapons, the secret levels, the secrets (not levels), etc. Everything is great. Also, I love those little nods like ''Ancient celtic secret'' or ''That's no ordinary rabbit''. Lo Wanging all the way to Camelot.
