About Vilmonic

Vilmonic is a living virtual world. Your goal is to bring life back from the brink of extinction.

Protect and breed unique pixel-art life forms whose pixels and color have meaning. Experiment with natural and artificial selection. Craft tools, construct buildings and change the environment. Uncover the secrets of the past as you dig up ancient tech and fend off the mindless haywire zombitons.

Don't be fooled by the SUPER CUTE look, Vilmonic is a deep and complex ARTIFICIAL LIFE SIMULATOR!

Evolving genetic code generates each creature's pixel-art body.

The shape, or morphology, of each animatroid or fungol is determined by its genes. Genes control the bending of internal bones or branches. Pixels cover the bones to create the shape of the body. The shape of the body and the number of different pixels determine the physiology of the life form.

Pixels and body shape determine biological function: hydration, nutrient use, movement, perception...

Each life form has a metabolism that processes hydration and nutrients at a rate determined by the metabo gene. The larger the life form (the more pixels in its body), the more hydration and nutrients it will need each metabolic cycle. Surface area determines how much hydration each life form evaporates. The more wrinkled the body is, the more surface area there is.

Simple graph-shaped brains create emergent behavior: fear, aggression, attraction...

A simple set of rules, derived from genes, controls the behavior of each animatroid. Animatroids have external sensors (motion/scent/water) and internal sensors (hunger/stress/thirst). Animatroids' brains have attraction/repulsion relationships between these sensors. It is these relationships that determine each animatroid's behavior.

Natural selection and breeding are the only way to evolve your life forms - unless you "cheat" with genetic engineering!

Your animatroids and fungols will evolve over many generations into new species. The genetic code of each life form is passed down to its offspring during reproduction, with a chance of mutation. Evolution is a slow process. To speed things up, try crafting and drinking a lot of sugary beverages. Toxic waste can also be useful (and dangerous!) It can cause drastic mutations in offspring.

Export your creatures and share them with friends!

fig. 1 Exported Creature Cards, don't edit that genetic code!

I think the mixed reviews in such games are because they often do not have a "game" technically, but people expect one. If you want gameplay you will want to avoid this software, but do try the demo on itch to make sure this is something you would enjoy. This is a great, unique a-life evo-sim, reminds me of "Minicraft" (2D Minecraft by Notch). Similar to Biomorphs from "The Blind Watchmaker". There is an old version called "Vilemonic", also there is a free, more updated version for internet browser actually, check the Vilmonic discord server for links, and also more info on development and mechanics. I think better public (in-game?) documentation would be desireable to appeal to more people though.

I keep trying this game because it seems interesting but... It feels like they laid all the ground work for a fun game but didn't implement it very well. Like, okay, i can breed new animatroids and they have all these cool different traits but... why? For what purpose? So i can click on them and see "oh wow, this guy looks a little different and is aggressive, that's fun"? lol Maybe i'm not giving it enough of a chance but it seems like a sad attempt at a Sim Life/Sim Earth with no real goal. Maybe if i played it more I'd see the purpose but at the surface it seems like a pointless game. I feel like it should be more of a top down game instead of a game where you're walking around and doing stuff... The tutorial basically teaches you nothing about the Animatroids, it teaches you how to craft and build. Which... i don't even know the purpose of lol There's also zombies that i guess build things and eventually you have to like, push them back, so that seems like an attempt at adding some sort of "conflict" to the game but i don't really understand it either. I'm leaving my comments open in case anyone wants to say "No, but this is why it's fun!" cause it's a game that intere…

highly recommend if you are a person who likes catching bugs outside or if you would repeatedly look up things like "dino game" "dinosaur game" "dinosaur zoo game" online, and found that online games like dinosaur zookeeper were unsatisfying because they were designed to break out of their enclosures and/or be killed. you can engage in the sandbox and crafting elements while you wait for the fauna and flora to evolve naturally, and while the inventory management and crafting systems are very simple, this is a small, inexpensive game that does exactly what it was designed to, and does it well. 9/10 on the being able to bother the animals scale. I'd actually say I prefer this to the god-style evolution simulations, because there are things for you to do that don't involve majorly disrupting the simulation or waiting around for things to happen. if the dev does another game, I might be interested in seeing more complex biomes and environments and more animals that affect their surroundings in some way.

The creatures mutate extremely slowly, in a direction you can't control. You can have very few total creatures. Try playing Apico if you want a good genetic engineering game.

The game is very interesting and cool, but as a GAME- which is my priority, I'm not sure that it's really worth it. You might enjoy it, but i just don't think i can "Recommend" the "game" if you do play it, try islands. This is not to say it's not GOOD. I think there's a lot of good stuff in here. I also think the game has a lot of depth and things to learn. The problem is that it feels a bit like fully diving in isn't really optional, it's what you HAVE to do in order to make any "progress" The crafting menu should not require specific ordering of components.
