About Unforgiving Trials: The Darkest Crusade

The land is Cursed. Dark horrors have conquered the kingdom of men. Countless brave adventurers have attempted to cleanse this evil. None have returned...

A nobleman enters the inn seeking adventurers to join him on his holy quest. Once again a small fellowship departs on it's quest to vanquish the evil that torments the land. Now the fate of the kingdom rests upon the shoulders of one brave party. A heavy burden weighs upon their souls, for now they have to face the Unforgiving Trials.

STORY

Every 20 years Corruption spreads across the lands inflicting terror and fear in the hearts of villagers. No one knows the reason for this calamity except the old King who perished when the hordes swarmed the Capital city. Many tried to reach the king in attempt to gain any knowledge or insight to fight the curse. Yet it all proved futile as no one ever returned to tell the tale. The story begins in a bustling inn along the road that leads east towards the Capital. A mysterious young lord ventures forth only with his most trusted guardian and a pouch full of coins. It is up to him to recruit a party of the very best adventurers: knights, wizards, thieves and oddballs. Recruit whoever it takes to reach the old King and reclaim the lands of man. While your quest seems straightforward it is certainly not an easy task as vile beasts and threatening monstrosities lurk the realm, ready to strike you down at the first sign of weakness.

AMATERASU SOFTWARE

We are a team of four video game enthusiasts with a childhood dream of making our own video games witch laid dormant till now. Every member of our team is a fan of old school JRPG genre. It's our dream to revitalize its turn based battle system witch is shunned more and more every year in favor of more action oriented combat. For this reason we decided that our first project will be battle oriented JRPG in order to reignite the passion of old school turn based combat.

We are grateful for all the support and are looking for your feedback on what kind of additional content (classes, spells, characters) you want us to add in the game.

✦ AI summary

Players praise Unforgiving Trials as a challenging, old-school RPG with compelling atmosphere and deliberate design that emphasizes persistence and sacrifice, though some appreciate its simplicity while others find its story unclear. However, many criticize the game's poor pacing, with slow turn-based combat mechanics that waste player time, archaic systems that feel dated, and punishing difficulty combined with limited early-game options that frustrate rather than engage.

Unforgiving Trials: The Darkest Crusade is an old-school, punishing RPG that wears its intentions plainly on its sleeve. Developed and published by Amaterasu Software, the game is built around a grim premise: a kingdom plagued by a cyclical curse, corrupted lands choked with monsters, and a long history of adventurers who attempted to break the cycle and failed. You begin in a quiet inn where a noble summons you to assemble a party of four and march toward the heart of the blight. It’s a simple setup, but it effectively frames the crusade as a desperate undertaking in which exhaustion, sacrifice, and persistence play just as large a role as raw strength. The world is painted in broad strokes, but those strokes give the adventure a sense of weight and inevitability, suggesting that your party is only the latest in a long line of doomed heroes. The gameplay foundation is modeled after classic JRPG dungeon crawlers, blending menu-driven exploration with turn-based battles that hinge on timing, resource management, and party composition. You recruit four characters from a fairly wide selection of classes, each with its own identity: heavy front-line bruisers, evasive rogues, support u…

This game’s pacing is atrocious. The FF6-style action meters pause each time it’s your turn, presumably to allow you free time to decide your action, but it defeats the point of the meter. You would lose nothing by replacing the meter with a manipulable turn order, except several seconds of dead space per turn. The encounters are also obviously scripted, so the time silently walking between battles in each gauntlet is also purposeless. The agonizingly slow nature of progression is especially a problem considering its difficulty and archaic mechanics. Enemies start out with a wide variety of status and buff moves before you can even start teaching your party new skills, and a non-boss encounter in the first gauntlet has a move that attacks all characters in the party for triple-digit damage. The game doesn’t explain how elemental damage works, or how HP, MP, and TP restore or reset between encounters. As a result, experimenting with different party comps and strategies is slow and frustating. I was able to make it to the third gauntlet, but couldn’t get past the beastmaster, so I had to start a new game to try a different party, and then I started having trouble getting past…
