The Journey Down: Chapter Three

Masterpiece.

The final game in the Trilogy of "The Journey Down". It fulfilled my expectation of being longer with better graphics and more puzzles. There are more locales to explore and you will be back tracking quite frequently to complete the puzzles. Surprisingly, I wasn't bored or frustrated which speaks a lot about the level design and story progression. The story pacing is handled well and the "Behind the Scenes" shows there were lot of more locations that were cut out in the final draft. In all, playing all 3 games during a weekend isn't a bad deal. - 8/10

This final installment follows Bwana, Kito, and Lina as they venture into the legendary Underland in search of long-awaited answers surrounding the Great Asili Tree and the powerful forces manipulating events from the shadows. The game embraces the traditions of classic point-and-click adventures while standing apart through its distinctive Afro-Caribbean influences, creating an atmosphere that feels fresh and unlike anything else in the genre. Rather than introducing unnecessary twists for shock value, the story focuses on providing meaningful resolutions that reward players who have followed the series from the beginning. The narrative is easily the strongest aspect of the experience. Every chapter of the trilogy has built toward this finale, and Chapter Three succeeds by tying together lingering mysteries without sacrificing character development. This third episode struggled to get to the finish line, even requiring a Kickstarter to get some extra funding. It can be noticed that a few locations and cutscenes look quite less detailed if not outright unfinished, and occasionally recorded dialogue suffers from the same issues noticed in the first episode. Puzzles are easier and there's a much bigger emphasis on narrative, as it feels like the content that should have rather belonged to two episodes is crammed in here, with a grander plot and mystical elements introduced this late; after making reaching the Underland the objective of the first two chapters, less time than I'd have liked is spent there. A larger part of the game is spent returning to the original city, St. Armando, but whereas in the first episode only the outskirts were seen, in the heart of the metropolis it's quite more cyberpunk, with even a few locales blatantly lifted from Blade Runner. In short, the tone is less consistent. Even so, it's honestly better than I remembered.
