Business Wars - The Card Game

A cute minimalist deck building tower defense game set in the world of business. Pretty fun and original although there are a few bits of rough translation that leave me a little confused about some card effects.

FInally, something new and unique. From time to time, I get the urge to browse through the indie collection on Steam to find something special or just different, most of the times with no luck. So last time I didn't browse, just clicked on random games to see if I can find one that grabs my attention. That's when I've stumbled upon the game collection of [i]Black Phoenix Studios[/i]. I was really considering to buy the whole bundle as it was on sale but I bought only the [i]Counter Terrorism - Minesweeper[/i] game and this one just to see if they meet my standards. I was really lucky that I bought them at the same time because the other game has really severe issues which would have made me reconsider to buy something else from [i]Black Phoenix Studios[/i]. And then, I would have missed out a card game with the most potential I've seen in the last decade (or since [i]Ants![/i], which is one of my favorite in this genre). This game may not appeal to everyone and it's still unpolished. The hints (or the lack thereof) are not really helpful. I'm still struggling to understand some aspects of the game up to this game because of the broken English it uses. (I'm not a native speaker so…

While this game has lots of business attributes and good deck building mechanics that make for a potentially fun game, I cannot recommend this game. Firstly, the poor grammar. While I was able to work it out slowly, poor grammar still made for confusing rule structures. Secondly, the tutorial at the beginning did explain what things were but I felt like they left out a few key steps on how these cards function together or even how they generally work. I do not mind working things out through trial and error, that is sometimes part of business, but there seemed to be a lack of transparency. I was unable to see where money came from, how it was lost, where these influences came from, why I didn't seem to get any, what these phases do, what makes them so different, what the colored cards even mean and so on. In the end, I do not recommend this game in it's current state.

Review on Business Wars - The Card Game Received a copy of the game from a dear friend of mine awhile back and didn't feel like opening it. Just left lying on my pile of games to play until the whole lockdown happening. Getting stuck at home with nothing else to do, i've decided to give it a try, why not. When I started a new game (or a 'new business' as they call it) there was only 1 business available, with 4 or so others to be unlocked. As i dive into my first company called Sunkie I was immediately presented with the board filled with unfamiliar number and symbols. Following the tutorial closely, i managed to strike at the heart of the enemy company and defeated it, earning points to further improve my deck. The first game took more than half an hour as I was learning as i go and had to delve into the help section for explanations on the large number of card effects. Also, completing the first game, i unlocked another company, which i immediately tried playing. To my surprise, the core of the gameplay is mostly the same, but the special effect of the new company, Golden Land, had me stacking and discarding cards to deal large damage to the opponent, very much like a wizard c…

In this game, the terms for each card is extremely identical to the business terms and you can definitely learn more about businesses in this game. This is also an extremely challenging game and those hardcore gamers out there do come and play this game!
