Flashback (2019)

Just kept rolling and smacking myself into a tree until I closed the game.

I had an original copy back in the day and thought it was pretty cool though never completed it then. Was nice to revisit it again with the addition of rewind to help in the later levels. This version doesn't add too much, mostly just unlockable street art and updated graphics and sound but nothing too notable. You can toggle between new and old, the old sound is 8 bit but I remember it on a 16 sound blaster so the sounds just miss a little for me. Overall however good story, beautiful graphics and animation for the time.

Exploring alien worlds, sneaking past enemies, and solving environmental puzzles creates a satisfying blend of action and adventure. 🤖 The atmosphere is one of the game's greatest strengths. From futuristic cities to dangerous jungles, every location feels mysterious, and the soundtrack perfectly complements the sci-fi setting. 🎵🌍 Some jumps require precise timing, the controls show their age, and figuring out where to go next can occasionally be frustrating. However, those classic quirks are part of what makes the experience memorable. I expected an old platformer... instead I found one of the coolest sci-fi adventures of the '90s. 🚀✨ A true classic that still deserves to be remembered. 👏

During my childhood, Blackthorne (1994) introduced me to the genre of 2D cinematic platformers. Flashback is simply an amazing 2D cinematic platformer with great art and challenging but eventually rewarding gameplay once you master it. There is an undeniable learning curve to this game's movement and combat. The movements in this game have to be deliberate and well thought out. This is not a game where you smash the keyboard in a panic. After mastering the controls, you start to appreciate the careful design of this game. While Another World was a clear inspiration for Flashback, Flashback easily surpasses Another World in the enjoyability of gameplay. Another World is great as a work of art, but it is not so fun to play since one hit kills you and you have to go back to a checkpoint. In Flashback, you have a rechargeable shield which can withstand four hits and only the fifth one is fatal. Certain environmental hazards and falling from a great height cause instant death, but otherwise there is room for error when dealing with enemies. There is a specific way to fight every enemy type if you have the patience to learn it. Playing without the rewind function helps learning the way…
