About What?!

The moon shines as the midnight wind blows through the half-opened window. A stern figure sits in a brown leather chair and lights up a cigar.

A rustle of newspaper and a gleam in the figure's eye... A new case has presented itself, and it's detective is ready.

Patty "Pat" Irvin sweeps out of his chair and collects his things. His thirst for solving crime is about to be sated.

What is What?!?

What?! is a single-player mystery game that focuses on its compact story and unconventional solutions. Players will take on the role of Pat Irvin, a ditzy private investigator struggling to maintain his family business.

Players will have access to four full cases, and an additional tutorial case, with each case evolving upon existing ideas while remaining distinct.

✦ AI summary

Players appreciate this short detective game as a fun, lighthearted experience with charming art and sound design, though the puzzle-solving mechanics feel somewhat unsatisfying since evidence connections aren't always logical or clearly explained. The game is quick to complete (around an hour for all five cases) and allows easy retry attempts, but the lack of meaningful guidance means solving cases often feels like guessing rather than deduction, and players wish there was clearer progression or hints to work through cases methodically.

Short detective game with five cases. The case takes place in two parts. In the first part you walk around the scene or location and interact with clues. They’re marked with icons so it’s impossible to miss them, and almost all have a connection to the case. The location is small. Once you’re done with the examination, you need to designate the culprit and present the required number of evidence. Each case has a couple of bad endings, but this is not a big problem because you can immediately try again. Unfortunately, solving a case is not satisfying. It’s a guessing game because evidence doesn’t give any meaningful information. You have a notepad where you can check all collected evidence, but it doesn’t contain anything relevant to the case. If you want to check out the evidence again, you can to return to the crime scene.

Short little puzzle game where you are a detective solving five different crimes. The crime scene is littered in easily identified clues and suspects which you investigate, gather evidence then select who you believe is the culprit and three pieces of evidence to support it. The solving part was a little janky just because sometimes it felt as though more pieces of evidence supported the case and I picked the "wrong" items but you can just go back and try again (and probably brute force the solutions if you really wanted). Game play is probably an hour or less for all five cases but I was entertained.

Nice game! The phenomenon is good when you try to investigate the case by yourself in a third-person view. And I also like the funny case like the hat, the chair, and the student. It would be better if the case had some revealed progress, so thus I could think step by step. The art and the sound are really fun and suitable.
