About Éalú

✦ AI summary

Éalú is a point-and-click puzzle adventure where you guide a clockwork mouse through a stone labyrinth, solving environmental puzzles and uncovering secrets in a handcrafted stop-motion world. This meditative 2-4 hour experience stands out as a truly interactive silent film, with every frame painstakingly captured through real stop-motion photography and set to an original instrumental score by a tiny independent team of artists.

Éalú is an award winning, 2 to 4 hour long, meditative experience, depending on how deeply you explore the maze, focused on physical craft and reflection - made by a small, independent team of artists. It's best defined as a highly interactive, silent film set to a gorgeous instrumental score.------------------------------In a cozy, quiet nest at the heart of a stone-and-wood labyrinth, a clockwork mouse sleeps — and dreams of the outside world. When it awakens, the only way forward is through. To escape, the mouse must rely on clever thinking, keen senses, and hope — despite past failures. The maze is filled with locked doors, cryptic puzzles, and lurking dangers. But maybe, this time, freedom is possible.
Rock Paper Shotgun's Edwin Evans-Thirwell wrote
"It's a lovely-looking thing - a 'true stop-motion game' "PC Gamer's Ted Litchfield wrote, on previewing Éalú, that it's "...Somewhat unsettling, like a cross between Myst and Wallace and Gromit—cozy, but also lonely, with flashes of something sinister here and there.""...I think Beyond the Bark is cooking with a really special, singular atmosphere."Heybox / 不羁猫探索队 scored Éalú 4/4 and remarked "The strongest thematic unity of any indie I played this season… its handcrafted stop-motion quality simply cannot be replicated in 3D."

Éalú is a Point & Click Puzzle/Adventure Where You:

  • Guide a wooden, clockwork mouse from the maze’s center to its outer edges.
  • Solve environmental puzzles, uncover clues, and have dangerous encounters.
  • Eat cheese!
  • Discover the secrets of the maze — and the story hidden beneath it.

Background

Éalú is a spiritual sequel to "Tomcat Disposables" by Will Wood. If you're keen to know more, said short film can be seen by searching for Tomcat Disposables on YouTube, & gives backstory for our beloved mouse. The themes which inspired our game & its mechanics center on the confusing, sometimes destructive nature of algorithm driven behavioral loops, & the potential to be drawn in by or escape them.

An Artistic Experience Lovingly Made by a Tiny Team

As mentioned at the top, based on playtests we anticipate that, for most players, Éalú will be a focused 2 to 4 hour long experience. We put a lot of thought, time & care into our wordless story & it's themes which are expressed in tandem with phenomenal music, all with a goal of creating the ability to control a character in a gorgeous silent film.

Éalú is true, old-school stop-motion. Every animation was captured via photography frame-by-frame using real sets, hand-crafted props, and a physical wooden mouse. Over 512 video clips were painstakingly made by a single animator — mostly in a garden shed — and brought to life in Unity by one developer carefully ensuring that each movement flowed into the next.
All of the music was composed and recorded specifically for this artistic work by a single composer, and every illustration was drawn by hand.Éalú was made with no budget & no crowdfunding. Just 4 people passionate about the project:
  • Ivan Owen of Beyond the Bark- Concept, design, animation & writing
  • Benjamin Orr- Design, Unity development & writing
  • Will Wood- Musical composition, performance & recording
  • JT Paton- Original illustrations & promotional art
We hope you enjoy experiencing Éalú as much as we loved making it.Want to get in touch with us? Feel free to reach out to us at EaluGame@gmail.com

✦ AI summary

Éalú is praised for its charming stop-motion art style, atmospheric Will Wood soundtrack, and wholesome puzzle design that makes it accessible to newcomers, but players consistently note it's more of an artistic experience than a substantive game, with roughly an hour of actual gameplay, simple puzzles, and tedious navigation through repeated door animations that interrupt the experience. Most players recommend it primarily for those already appreciating Will Wood's work or seeking a brief, meditative point-and-click adventure rather than a challenging puzzle game.

Is there cheese in the great beyond? This is such a amazing game, I love puzzle type games, and seeing tomcat disposable have a sequel is awesome, also the stop motion, music, and plot is so well done!! 🐁

Sweet, but very short. If you're here to enjoy the art of a wooden mouse, stop motion photography animation, and a WW soundtrack, then I would recommend this game. But it honestly really is more of an art piece than a game, so keep that in mind. The game itself is beautiful, with a sweet soundtrack (some areas are pretty, some are a bit sinister sounding, all in all, good ost, with some WW motifs in there), however, there really isn't much game. I think the actual game, as in completing of the puzzles and the main ending, took me just under an hour. And none of the puzzles are actually difficult. Most of the game is mapping out the maze (which I mapped onto paper, noting doors and where puzzles where etc). There's a second ending of a sort which was a grind to get to, and that took me another half an hour of the same 1 and a bit minute set of actions - I like what I saw there, but I'm not sure it was really worth it in the end. I bought the game when it was on sale, but I think full price for 1 hour of game is a bit much tbh - I think most people would rather go to the cinema. I don't regret getting this game, and I don't feel cheated, but I did get it for £6, and I already…

Be sure to have Paper and some form of marker for the best experience. Very calm point and click adventure escape room. If Your game shy/new or know someone who is this is the perfect wholesome gateway into gaming. <3 I'm going to get my mum to play this. XD

REVIEWING EVERY GAME I'VE PERFECTED: I feel like this game is only enjoyable if you're already a pre-established Will Wood fan. As a Will Wood fan I enjoy the game because I appreciate his work, but from a game perspective, I wouldn't recommend it unless you want to experience it just because its WW. The gameplay and interactions and quite laggy and frustrating at times. The concept is fine, the endings are cute and the puzzles are fun. But again, unless you're already a pre-established Will Wood fan, I wouldn't really recommend it.

Feels more like art to be admired than a game to be played; The art is really good. Very charming wooden stop motion. The music is also excellent, of course, as it's composed by Will Wood (the best to ever do it) The gameplay is just tedious. The little animations that play as you move around and interact with stuff can get really annoying when you want to go somewhere on the opposite side of the maze and it just takes you 3 minutes of clicking on doors. The puzzles are fine, but a bit simple for my taste. There's just not a lot of them though. Some puzzle are easily brute forced and two are really tedious. And it's interspersed with tedious clicking through doors. The game was only like 2 hours, which would be fine for its current price, except most of that is waiting for animations to finish rather than actual gameplay. I especially disliked the final puzzle: [spoiler] you just have to map out where every puzzle is. Again the animation thing rears its head as pressing the buttons to move stuff around is tedious. But the fact that you have to map out the puzzle, presumably with your own pen and paper in real life, just rubs me the wrong way. If there was at least some way in the…
