✦ AI summary

Players praise Evil Tonight's solid gameplay mechanics, smooth controls, and pixel art style, with exploration and level design standing out as particularly enjoyable. However, common criticisms include weak storytelling with a bland narrative and unsatisfying conclusion, awkward dialogue, and the lack of a map feature which makes backtracking through the academy tedious. Some also note technical issues with enemy stagger mechanics that can break challenge runs.

With the caveat that I am not intimately familiar with survival horror games, I'd recommend this as a part of the DYA collection. As in, if you buy that, don't skip it, but on its own merits? There's a lot of flaws. (Edit: On reflection, I've recommended lesser games with fewer caveats. It stayed fun for four playthroughs, it's a good game.) I enjoyed the gameplay loop in general; the combat is punchy, the field is big enough to feel rewarding during exploration but small enough that backtracking doesn't feel too cumbersome, the antagonist's story is relatable and touches on the casual cruelty of those in power. The artwork is, as always, top notch - DYA has never failed to impress me there - as is the music and sound design. Enemy calls are readable and distinct, the gunfire is convincingly powerful, and I found my heart racing for a lot of the game. I may not have screamed, but I certainly yelped a few times. For that matter, kudos for the judicious use of jump scares. There's no getting away from them these days, but it's nice to see horror that actually relies on building an atmosphere. There's a lot to love here, or I wouldn't be working on my third play through. Commando Mo…

Evil Tonight isn’t bad, strictly speaking. I just don’t think it’s much of anything. It seeks to recreate and modernize Resident Evil 1 style survival horror which it technically does in that it is mechanically a classic survival horror game with a few puzzles mainly involving finding keys. It also takes place in a single large facility with a sordid history. See, nothing in it really gels together very well. Nothing clashes, sure, but every piece of it is just kind of free-floating. Combat can be completely avoided like in Resident Evil 1, but it’s not difficult to avoid, and as such resources that could be scarce aren’t. Therefore when you need to actually use them you have more than you could ever use and you can just riddle the enemies and bosses with bullets. Walking back and forth around the mansion for keys isn’t tense, it’s a commute. The puzzles are fine, but there’s only like 4 in the whole game which are actually puzzles, most of the game is remembering which door took the highly specific key which I don’t consider a puzzle. Finally the game isn’t scary. There’s nothing gruesome, threatening, repulsive or unsettling in the whole game. This isn’t me being a big tough g…

Just finished my first playthrough and I enjoyed it. It's nothing extraordinary but worth the price. Things I particularly liked were: *The pixel art * The exploration aspects * The shorter play time * The simple but challenging puzzles which slightly change on each new game My only potential negative is that it is really light on the horror aspects.

I really liked this game even though it has some slight problems with boss design and the aiming is kinda clunky at certain times. Overall it was a really nice game! Really hope the devs continue developing games, there's so much potential here and i'd love to play another one. Keep on the good work! Hope to see you soon again!
